Translation

✧ The death of al-Muʿtamid In the year two hundred and seventy-nine, al-Muʿtamid ʿalā Allāh died on the night of Monday, when eleven nights remained of Rajab, in Baghdādh. He was the Commander of the Faithful al-Muʿtamid ʿalā Allāh, son of al-Mutawakkil ʿalā Allāh, son of al-Muʿtaṣim, son of al-Rashīd. His name was Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Hārūn al-Rashīd b. al-Mahdī Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh Abī Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās. He was older than his brother Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq by six months, and he remained after him for less than a year. None of the authority was his; rather, all authority relating to the management of the caliphate belonged to al-Muwaffaq. He had drunk on the riverbank in al-Ḥasanī in Baghdādh, on Sunday, much drink, and he had supper and ate much, and he died at night. Al-Muʿtaḍid brought the judges and the notables of the people, and they looked at him, and he was carried to Sāmarrā and buried there. His age was fifty years and six months, and he was older than al-Muwaffaq by six months, and his caliphate was twenty-three years and six months. During his caliphate he was under constraint; his brother Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq exercised control over him and restricted him, until he was in need at some times of three hundred dinars, and he could not find them at that time. He said: Is it not among the wonders that one like me sees what little is withheld from him, while the whole world is taken in his name? And none of that is in his hands; to him all wealth is brought, yet he is denied some of what is levied for him. He was the first of the caliphs to move from Surra man raʾā since it was built, and after him none of them returned to it. Abū Saʿīd al-Ḥasan b. Saʿīd al-Naysābūrī mourned him, saying: The eye of miserable time has become cool, though it was hot, weak, and sore; And calamities have attained their desires by the death of the Imam of guidance, al-Muʿtamid. No caution remains for me after him; so before calamities, let them strive.
