Translation

✧ The Deposition of Jaʿfar b. al-Muʿtamid and the Appointment of al-Muʿtaḍid In the year two hundred and seventy-nine, in al-Muḥarram, al-Muʿtamid ʿalā Allāh came out and sat for the commanders, the judges, and the notables of the people, and informed them that he had deposed his son al-Mufawwiḍ ilā Allāh Jaʿfar from the succession, and made the succession to al-Muʿtaḍid bi-Allāh Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. al-Muwaffaq. They bore witness against al-Mufawwiḍ that he had renounced the succession, and his name was removed from the coinage, the Friday sermon, the ṭirāz, and other things, and the sermon was given for al-Muʿtaḍid. It was a witnessed day. Yaḥyā b. ʿAlī said, congratulating al-Muʿtaḍid: May it please you, a compact in which you are the foremost, granted to you by a Lord most knowing of your merit. For if you have become the heir to our covenant, you will tomorrow be among us the glorified imam. May he who appointed you over us never cease to attain his desire, and may whoever opposes you grieve and be humbled. The pillar of the religion had in it a crookedness, and it returned with this covenant, straightened. The face of the king became joyful, laughing, illuminating for us what had been dark. So take it and bind firmly the compact you have encompassed, for you, above all people, are the arbiter in it.
