✧ Rāfiʿ b. Harthama's Seizure of Jurjān In the year two hundred and seventy-five, Rāfiʿ b. Harthama marched to Jurjān and removed Muḥammad b. Zayd from it. Muḥammad went to Isṭirābādh, and Rāfiʿ besieged him there and remained against him for about two years. Prices rose so high that nothing edible could be found, and the weight of a dirham of salt was sold for two silver dirhams. Muḥammad b. Zayd departed from it at night with a small band of followers to Sāriyah. Rāfiʿ sent an army after him, and they fought. Muḥammad departed from Sāriyah and from Ṭabaristān, and that was in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year two hundred and seventy-seven. Rustum b. Qārin sought safe-conduct from Rāfiʿ in Ṭabaristān, and Ibn Qūlah made a marriage alliance with him. ʿAlī b. al-Layth came to Rāfiʿ while he was in Ṭabaristān. His brother ʿAmr had imprisoned him in Kirmān, and he contrived until he and his two sons, al-Muʿaddal and al-Layth, escaped. Rāfiʿ sent Muḥammad b. Hārūn to Shālūs as his deputy, and ʿAlī b. Kālī brought it to him, seeking safe-conduct. Muḥammad b. Zayd came to the two of them and besieged them in Shālūs, cutting off their route, so no news from them reached Rāfiʿ. When their news was delayed from him, he sent a spy to bring him word of them. The spy returned and informed him of Muḥammad b. Zayd's siege of the two of them in Shālūs. This distressed him greatly, and he marched to them. Muḥammad b. Zayd departed from them to the land of al-Daylam, and Rāfiʿ entered the land of al-Daylam behind him and traversed it until he reached the borders of Qazwīn. He returned to al-Rayy and stayed there until al-Muwaffaq died in Rajab of the year two hundred and seventy-six.
