قَبْضِ الْمُوَفَّقِ عَلَى ابْنِهِ الْمُعْتَضِدِ بِاللَّهِ فِي سنة خمس وسبعين ومائتين، فِي شَوَّالٍ، قَبَضَ الْمُوَفَّقُ عَلَى ابْنِهِ الْمُعْتَضِدِ بِاللَّهِ أَبِي الْعَبَّاسِ أَحْمَدَ. وَسَبَبُ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْمُوَفَّقَ دَخَلَ إِلَى وَاسِطَ وَنَزَلَ بِهَا، ثُمَّ عَادَ إِلَى بَغْدَاذَ، وَتَخَلَّفَ الْمُعْتَمِدُ عَلَى اللَّهِ بِالْمَدَائِنِ، وَأَمَرَ الْمُوَفَّقُ ابْنَهُ أَنْ يَسِيرَ إِلَى بَعْضِ الْوُجُوهِ، فَقَالَ: لَا أَخْرُجُ إِلَّا إِلَى الشَّامِ لِأَنَّهَا الْوِلَايَةُ الَّتِي وَلَّانِيهَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ. فَلَمَّا امْتَنَعَ عَلَيْهِ أَمَرَ بِإِحْضَارِهِ، فَلَمَّا حَضَرَ أَمَرَ بَعْضُ خَدَمِهِ أَنْ يَحْبِسَهُ فِي حُجْرَةٍ فِي دَارِهِ، فَلَمَّا قَامَ الْمُعْتَضِدُ تَقَدَّمَ إِلَيْهِ الْخَادِمُ وَأَمَرَهُ بِدُخُولِ تِلْكَ الدَّارِ، فَدَخَلَ وَوُكِّلَ بِهِ فِيهَا. وَثَارَ الْقُوَّادُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ وَمَنْ تَبِعَهُمْ وَرَكِبُوا، وَاضْطَرَبَتْ بَغْدَاذُ لَمَّا رَأَوُا السِّلَاحَ وَالْقُوَّادَ، فَرَكِبَ الْمُوَفَّقُ إِلَى الْمَيْدَانِ، وَقَالَ لَهُمْ: مَا شَأْنُكُمْ ؟ أَتَرَوْنَ أَنَّكُمْ أَشْفَقُ عَلَى وَلَدِي مِنِّي، وَقَدِ احْتَجْتُ إِلَى تَقْوِيمِهِ ! فَانْصَرَفُوا. فَسَكَنَ النَّاسُ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ وَتَرَاجَعُوا إِلَى مَنَازِلِهِمْ، ثُمَّ أَفْرَجَ عَنْهُ، وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ وَالْمِنَّةُ.
Translation
✧ Al-Muwaffaq's Seizure of His Son Al-Muʿtaḍid billāh In the year two hundred and seventy-five, in Shawwāl, al-Muwaffaq seized his son al-Muʿtaḍid billāh Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad. The reason for that was that al-Muwaffaq entered Wāsiṭ and encamped there, then returned to Baghdādh, while al-Muʿtamid ʿalā Allāh remained behind at al-Madāʾin. Al-Muwaffaq ordered his son to proceed to one of the districts, but he said: "I will not go out except to Syria, for it is the province to which the Commander of the Faithful appointed me." When he refused him, he ordered him to be brought. When he came, he ordered one of his servants to confine him in a chamber in his house. When al-Muʿtaḍid rose, the servant advanced to him and ordered him to enter that house, and he entered and was placed under guard therein. The commanders among his followers and those who followed them rose up and mounted, and Baghdādh was thrown into commotion when they saw the weapons and the commanders. So al-Muwaffaq rode to the maydān and said to them: "What is the matter with you? Do you think that you are more compassionate toward my son than I am? I found it necessary to discipline him!" So they dispersed. The people then calmed down and returned to their homes. Then he was released, and praise and grace belong to God.
