The Year 270 AH from the Prophetic Emigration
وَفَاةِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، وَوِلَايَةِ أَخِيهِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَفِي سنة سبعين ومائتين تُوُفِّيَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ الْعَلَوِيُّ صَاحِبُ طَبَرِسْتَانَ فِي رَجَبٍ، وَكَانَتْ وِلَايَتُهُ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ وَثَمَانِيَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَسِتَّةَ أَيَّامٍ، وَوَلِيَ مَكَانَهُ أَخُوهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ. وَكَانَ الْحَسَنُ جَوَادًا امْتَدَحَهُ رَجُلٌ فَأَعْطَاهُ عَشَرَةَ آلَافِ دِرْهَمٍ، وَكَانَ مُتَوَاضِعًا لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى. حُكِيَ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ مَدَحَهُ شَاعِرٌ فَقَالَ: اللَّهُ فَرْدٌ، وَابْنُ زَيْدٍ فَرْدٌ، فَقَالَ: بِفِيكَ الْحَجَرُ، يَا كَذَّابُ، هَلَّا قُلْتَ اللَّهُ فَرْدٌ، وَابْنُ زَيْدٍ عَبْدٌ ! ثُمَّ نَزَلَ عَنْ مَكَانِهِ، وَخَرَّ سَاجِدًا لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى، وَأَلْصَقَ خَدَّهُ بِالتُّرَابِ، وَحَرَمَ الشَّاعِرَ. وَكَانَ عَالِمًا بِالْفِقْهِ وَالْعَرَبِيَّةِ، مَدَحَهُ شَاعِرٌ فَقَالَ: لَا تَقُلْ بُشْرَى، وَلَكِنْ بُشْرَيَانِ عِزَّةُ الدَّاعِي وَيَوْمُ الْمِهْرَجَانِ فَقَالَ لَهُ: كَانَ الْوَاجِبُ أَنْ تَفْتَتِحَ الْأَبْيَاتَ بِغَيْرِ لَا، فَإِنَّ الشَّاعِرَ الْمُجِيدَ يَتَخَيَّرُ لِأَوَّلِ الْقَصِيدَةِ مَا يُعْجِبُ السَّامِعَ، وَيَتَبَرَّكُ بِهِ، وَلَوِ ابْتَدَأَتْ بِالْمِصْرَاعِ الثَّانِي لَكَانَ أَحْسَنُ، فَقَالَ الشَّاعِرُ: لَيْسَ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَلِمَةٌ أَجْلُّ مَنْ قَوْلِ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَوَّلُهَا لَا، فَقَالَ: أَصَبْتَ ! وَأَجَازَهُ. وَحُكِيَ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ غَنَّى عِنْدَهُ مُغَنٍّ بِأَبْيَاتِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ فِي عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي لَهَبٍ الَّتِي أَوَّلُهَا: وَأَنَا الْأَخْضَرُ مَنْ يَعْرِفُنِي ؟ أَخْضَرُ الْجِلْدَةِ مِنْ بَيْتِ الْعَرَبِ فَلَمَّا وَصَلَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَابْنَيْ عَمِّهِ وَبِعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ غَيَّرَ الْبَيْتَ فَقَالَ: لَا بِعَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، فَغَضِبَ الْحَسَنُ، وَقَالَ: يَا ابْنَ اللَّخْنَاءِ، تَهْجُو بَنِي عَمِّنَا بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ، وَتُحَرِّفُ مَا مُدِحُوا بِهِ ؟ لَئِنْ فَعَلْتَهَا مَرَّةً ثَانِيَةً لَأَجْعَلَنَّهَا آخِرَ غِنَائِكَ.
Translation
✧ The death of al-Ḥasan b. Zayd, and the accession of his brother Muḥammad In the year two hundred and seventy, al-Ḥasan b. Zayd al-ʿAlawī, lord of Ṭabaristān, died in Rajab. His rule had lasted nineteen years, eight months, and six days, and his brother Muḥammad b. Zayd succeeded him. Al-Ḥasan was generous. A man praised him and he gave him ten thousand dirhams. He was humble before God Almighty. It is related of him that a poet praised him and said: “God is unique, and Ibn Zayd is unique.” He said: “May your mouth be filled with stones, you liar! Why did you not say: God is unique, and Ibn Zayd is a servant?” Then he descended from his place, fell prostrate to God Almighty, pressed his cheek to the dust, and deprived the poet. He was learned in jurisprudence and Arabic. A poet praised him and said: Do not say “good tidings,” but rather two good tidings: the might of the caller and the day of the Mihrajān. He said to him: “It would have been proper for you to open the verses with something other than ‘no,’ for the excellent poet chooses for the beginning of the ode what pleases the listener and seeks blessing through it. Had you begun with the second hemistich, it would have been better.” The poet said: “There is no word in the world more majestic than the saying ‘There is no god but God,’ and its beginning is ‘no.’” He said: “You are right!” and rewarded him. It is related of him that a singer sang before him the verses of al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās about ʿUtbah b. Abī Lahab, whose beginning is: I am the green one; who knows me? Green of skin, from the house of the Arabs. When he reached his saying: By the Messenger of God and his two paternal cousins, and by ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, he altered the verse and said: “No, by ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.” Al-Ḥasan became angry and said: “O son of a foul woman, do you satirize our paternal cousins in my presence and distort what they were praised with? If you do it a second time, I will make it your last song.”
