Translation

✧ The Death of Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn and the Accession of His Son Khumārawayh In the year two hundred and seventy, Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, ruler of Miṣr, al-Shām, and the Syrian frontier fortresses, died. The cause of his death was that his deputy in Ṭarsūs, Yāzamān the eunuch, rose against him, seized him, rebelled against Aḥmad, and openly opposed him. Aḥmad gathered the armies and marched against him. When he reached Adhanah, he wrote to him and corresponded with him, seeking to win him over, but he paid no attention to his message. So Aḥmad advanced against him, besieged him, and blockaded him. Yāzamān then breached the river of the town onto the army's encampment, and the people almost perished. Aḥmad departed in rage and fury. It was wintertime. He sent word to Yāzamān: "I only departed out of fear that the sanctity of this frontier might be violated and the enemy covet it." When he returned to Anṭākiyah, he ate buffalo milk and consumed too much of it. He suffered an attack of indigestion from it, which persisted until it turned into chronic diarrhea. The physicians treated him, but he continued to eat in secret, so the medicine was of no avail, and he died, may God have mercy on him. His rule lasted about twenty-six years. He was intelligent, resolute, generous in good deeds and charity, devout, and he loved scholars and people of religion. He performed many acts of benevolence and for the welfare of the Muslims. He it was who built the citadel of Yāfā, for the city had been without a citadel. He inclined toward the school of al-Shāfiʿī and honored its followers. After him his son Khumārawayh succeeded. The commanders obeyed him, but his father's deputy in Damascus rebelled against him. He sent armies against him, and they expelled him, then marched from Damascus to Shayzar.
