✧ Al-Muʿtamid's journey to Syria and his return from the road In this year, al-Muʿtamid set out towards Egypt. The reason for that was that he had nothing of the caliphate but its name, and no decree of his was executed, whether in small matters or large. All authority belonged to al-Muwaffaq, and revenues were collected for him. Al-Muʿtamid became weary of that and disdained it, so he wrote secretly to Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, complaining to him of his situation, without the knowledge of his brother al-Muwaffaq. Aḥmad advised him to join him in Egypt, promised him support, and dispatched an army to al-Raqqah to await al-Muʿtamid's arrival. Al-Muʿtamid seized the opportunity of al-Muwaffaq's absence and set out in Jumādā al-Ūlā, accompanied by a group of commanders, and stayed at al-Kuḥayl to hunt. When he set out towards the district of Isḥāq b. Kundājīq, who was governor of al-Mawṣil and most of al-Jazīrah, Ibn Kundājīq fell upon the commanders who were with al-Muʿtamid and arrested them. They were Nayzak, Aḥmad b. Khāqān, and Khaṭārmish. He put them in irons and seized their money and mounts. Ṣāʿid b. Makhlad, al-Muwaffaq's vizier, had written to him on behalf of al-Muwaffaq. The reason he was able to get them into his grip was that he pretended to be with them in obedience to al-Muʿtamid, since he was the caliph. He met them when they entered his district and traveled with them for several stages. When they approached the district of Ibn Ṭūlūn, the retinue and pages who were with al-Muʿtamid and his commanders departed, but Ibn Kundājīq did not let his own companions depart. Then he drew the commanders aside in al-Muʿtamid's presence and said to them: "You have approached the district of Ibn Ṭūlūn, and authority there is his. You will become part of his army and under his command. Do you accept that, knowing that he is like one of you?" A debate took place among them about that until the day grew late, and al-Muʿtamid and those with him did not depart. Ibn Kundājīq said: "Come, let us debate away from the presence of the Commander of the Faithful." He took them by the hand to his tent, because their tents had already moved on. When they entered his tent, he arrested them and put them in irons. He then arrested the rest of the commanders who were with al-Muʿtamid and put them in irons. When he had finished with their affairs, he went to al-Muʿtamid and reproached him for leaving the abode of his kingship and that of his forefathers, and for abandoning his brother al-Muwaffaq at a time when the latter was engaged in a war that sought to kill him, kill the members of his house, and bring an end to their rule. Then he conveyed him and those with him until he brought them into Sāmarrā.
