✧ Mention of Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth al-Ṣaffār’s seizure of Kirmān In the year two hundred and fifty-five (255 AH), there took place a severe battle between Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth and ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Quraysh b. Shibl. The reason for that was that ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Shibl was over Fārs, so he wrote to al-Muʿtazz requesting Kirmān, and he mentioned the incapacity of the Ṭāhiriyya, and that Yaʿqūb had overcome them in Sijistān. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn had been slow in delivering the land tax of Fārs, so al-Muʿtazz wrote to him appointing him over Kirmān, and he also wrote to Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth appointing him over it, seeking to incite each one of them against his companion so that the burden of the one who perished would fall away from him, and he would be left alone with the other. Each one of them displayed obedience that had no reality to it, and al-Muʿtazz knew that from them. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn sent Ṭawq b. al-Mughallis to Kirmān, and Yaʿqūb marched to it. Ṭawq preceded him and took control of it. Yaʿqūb advanced until there remained between him and Kirmān one stage, and he halted there for two months, neither advancing toward Ṭawq nor did Ṭawq come out against him. When that became prolonged for him, he gave the appearance of departing to Sijistān, and he traveled two stages. The news of his departure reached Ṭawq, who thought that Yaʿqūb had changed his mind about fighting him and had abandoned Kirmān, so he laid aside the implements of war and sat down to food, drink, and amusements. News reached Yaʿqūb that Ṭawq had turned to drinking, so he turned back, covering the two stages in a single day. Ṭawq was not aware until the dust of his army appeared, and he said, “What is this?” It was said, “The dust of livestock.” It was not quicker than Yaʿqūb’s arrival, and he surrounded him and his companions. His companions went to resist and defend themselves, but Yaʿqūb said to his companions, “Make way for the people!” So they passed by fleeing, and they abandoned all that they had, and Yaʿqūb captured Ṭawq. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn had sent with Ṭawq, in boxes, shackles with which to bind whoever he captured from Yaʿqūb’s companions, and in boxes, necklaces and bracelets to give to the people of valor among his own companions. When Yaʿqūb plundered their army, he saw that and said, “What is this, O Ṭawq?” He informed him. So he took the necklaces and bracelets and gave them to his companions, and he took the shackles and collars and bound with them the companions of ʿAlī. When Ṭawq’s hand was brought out to place a collar in it, Yaʿqūb saw it, and on it was a bandage. He asked him about it, and he said, “A heat affliction struck me, so I bled it.” Yaʿqūb then ordered the removal of his own boot, and pieces of dry bread fell from it. He said, “O Ṭawq! This is my boot; I have not removed it from my foot for two months, and my bread is in my boot, from which I eat. And you sit drinking?” Then he entered Kirmān and took possession of it along with Sijistān.
