Translation

✧ In the year two hundred and fifty-five AH, there was a battle between Mufliḥ and al-Ḥasan b. Zayd al-Ṭālibī, and Mufliḥ defeated him and entered Āmul Ṭabaristān and burned the houses of al-Ḥasan b. Zayd. Then he marched after him to al-Daylam. Then he returned from Ṭabaristān after having entered it, and routed al-Ḥasan b. Zayd al-ʿAlawī, and Mūsā b. Bughā returned from al-Rayy. The reason for that was that Qabīḥah, the mother of al-Muʿtazz, when she saw the disturbance of the Turks, wrote to Mūsā asking him to come to them, hoping that he would arrive before someone hastened against her son. So he resolved to turn back, and Mufliḥ wrote ordering him to turn back from Ṭabaristān to him at al-Rayy. His letter reached Mufliḥ when he had already set out for the land of al-Daylam in pursuit of al-Ḥasan b. Zayd al-ʿAlawī. When the letter came to him, he returned. Then those of the people of Ṭabaristān who had fled from al-Ḥasan came to him, hoping to return to their homes, and said to him: "What is the reason for your return?" He informed them of the amir's letter to him, urging him firmly, but Mūsā was unable to set out from al-Rayy until the news of the killing of al-Muʿtazz and the oath of allegiance to al-Muhtadī reached him, so they pledged allegiance to al-Muhtadī. Then the mawālī who were with Mūsā learned of what Ṣāliḥ b. Waṣīf had taken of the wealth of the secretaries and the spoils of al-Muʿtazz, and they envied those residing in Sāmarrā. So they urged Mūsā b. Bughā to turn back, and Mufliḥ came to him while he was at al-Rayy, and he marched toward Sāmarrā. Al-Muhtadī wrote to him ordering him to return to al-Rayy and to remain at that frontier, but he did not do so. So he sent two men from Banū Hāshim to him, informing him of the scarcity of funds with him and warning him of the domination of the ʿAlawīs over what he would leave behind him, but he did not heed that. Ṣāliḥ b. Waṣīf made much of his turning back before al-Muhtadī, attributing to him disobedience and opposition, and declared himself innocent before al-Muhtadī of his action. When the messengers came to Mūsā, the mawālī clamored and almost fell upon the messengers. Mūsā sent back the reply, excusing himself by saying that those with him refused to return at his command without coming to the gate of the Commander of the Faithful, and citing what the messengers had witnessed, and that if he remained behind from them they would kill him. He sent with the messengers a group of his companions, and they arrived in Sāmarrā in the year two hundred and fifty-six AH.
