✧ The ascension of Yaʿqūb over Fārs In the year two hundred and fifty-five, on the fourth of Jumādā al-Ūlā, Yaʿqūb b. al-Layth took possession of Fārs. When ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. Shibl in Fārs learned what Yaʿqūb had done to Ṭawq, he became certain that he would come to him. ʿAlī was in Shīrāz, so he gathered his army and marched to a narrow pass outside Shīrāz. On one side of it was a mountain that could not be traversed, and on the other side was a river that could not be forded. He stationed himself at the head of the pass, whose route was so narrow that only one man could pass through it at a time, and he stood on the landward edge. He said: “Yaʿqūb cannot cross over to us.” Then he returned. Yaʿqūb advanced until he drew near that pass and encamped a mile from it. He went out alone with one other man and looked at the pass and the army while the followers of ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan reviled him, and he remained silent. Then he returned to his companions. The next day at noon he advanced with his companions until he reached the edge of the pass on the side facing Kirmān. He ordered his men to dismount and set down their baggage, and they did so. They mounted their beasts bareback. He took a dog he had with him and threw it into the water, and it swam toward the camp of ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn and his men had mounted to watch what he was doing, and they laughed at him. Yaʿqūb threw himself and his companions into the water on their horses, with lances in their hands, moving behind the dog. When ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn saw that Yaʿqūb had crossed most of the river, he was bewildered, and his plan collapsed. Yaʿqūb's men emerged behind ʿAlī's men. When their vanguard came out, his men fled toward the city of Shīrāz, because if Yaʿqūb and his men came out, they would find themselves between Yaʿqūb's army and the pass, with no refuge. They were routed, and ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn fell from his mount when his horse stumbled. He was taken prisoner, brought to Yaʿqūb, who put him in fetters and seized everything in his camp. Then he departed from his position and entered Shīrāz at night, and no one stirred. When morning came, his men plundered the house of ʿAlī and the houses of his followers. He took what was in the treasuries, levied the land tax, and returned to Sijistān. It is said that after Yaʿqūb al-Ṣaffār crossed the river, a fierce battle took place between him and ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn. ʿAlī had gathered a large force of mawālī, Kurds, and others, numbering fifteen thousand between cavalry and infantry. He arrayed his men into a right wing and a left wing, and he himself stood in the center. Al-Ṣaffār advanced, crossed the river, and when he stood with ʿAlī on the same ground, he and his army charged in a single assault against ʿAlī's army, and they held firm against them. Then he charged a second time, dislodged them from their positions, and pressed them hard in battle, and they fled headlong, no one turning to another. ʿAlī followed them, shouting at them and adjuring them by God to return or to halt, but no one paid attention to him. The infantry were slaughtered in great numbers, and the fugitives arrived at the gate of Shīrāz in the late afternoon. They crowded at the gates and scattered throughout the regions of Fārs, some of them reaching al-Ahwāz in their flight. When al-Ṣaffār saw the slaughter they had suffered, he ordered that they be spared. Had it not been for that, they would have been killed to the last man. The slain numbered five thousand. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn received three wounds and was then taken prisoner when they recognized him. Al-Ṣaffār entered Shīrāz, made a circuit of the city, and proclaimed a guarantee of safety, so the people felt secure. He tortured ʿAlī with various kinds of torture and took from his wealth a thousand purses—it is also said four hundred purses—as well as weapons, horses, and other things beyond count. He wrote to the caliph offering his obedience and sent him a magnificent gift, including ten white falcons, a piebald Chinese falcon, one hundred mann of musk, and other rare items. He returned to Sijistān with ʿAlī and Ṭawq under guard. When he left the territory of Fārs, the caliph sent his governors to it.
