Translation
✧ The Death of Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir On the night of the fourteenth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, the moon was eclipsed until most of it disappeared and its light was submerged, and at the end of its eclipse, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir, the governor of Iraq, died in Baghdad. He had held the governorship of Baghdad in the days of al-Mutawakkil, while his father was an amir and his grandfather was an amir. He was a gathering place for the people of knowledge and literature, and he had transmitted hadith. From Muḥammad b. Mūsā, who said: Al-Ḥasan b. Wahb was with Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir when a cloud appeared and thundered, lightened, and rained. Everyone present said something about it, and al-Ḥasan said: The sky poured down upon us a continuous downpour, in which the Marzubān opposed al-Simāk. I said to the lightning when it blazed therein: O fire-sticks of the sky, who kindled you? Is it a beloved whom you left, so he abandoned you, and he is the cloud that made you weep? Or did you imitate the Amir Abū al-ʿAbbās in his generosity, but you are not there? From Muḥammad b. Ghaylān, who said: Ibn al-Sikkīt informed me that Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir resolved to perform the pilgrimage. A poetess slave-girl came out to him and wept when she saw the traveling equipment. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh said: A tear like moist pearls on the smooth cheek, it poured forth at the moment of parting from the kohl-darkened eye. Then he said to her: "Respond to me." She said: When the radiant moon resolved to set away from us, the lovers are only exposed on the day of departure. From ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad, who said: My father narrated to me: Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir wrote to a slave-girl of his: What do you say of one whom sickness has wasted from the effort of your love until he became bewildered? She answered him: When we see a lover whom the effort of ardent love has harmed, we grant him kindness. His illness from which he died was ulcers that afflicted him in his throat and head, and they slaughtered him, and into them wicks were inserted. When his illness became severe, he wrote to his governors and companions delegating what he held of authority to his brother ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. When he died, his son Ṭāhir and his brother ʿUbayd Allāh disputed over the prayer over him. His son prayed over him, and ʿUbayd Allāh and the companions of Ṭāhir disputed until they drew swords and threw stones, and the common people inclined with the companions of Ṭāhir. ʿUbayd Allāh crossed to his house on the eastern side, and the commanders crossed with him because of Muḥammad's testament, for he had appointed him over his provinces. Then al-Muʿtazz later sent robes of honor to ʿUbayd Allāh, and ʿUbayd Allāh ordered fifty thousand dirhams for the one who brought him the robes.
