Translation

✧ The Killing of Bundār al-Ṭabarī In the year two hundred and fifty-three, Bundār al-Ṭabarī was killed. The cause of his killing was that when Musāwir b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Mawṣilī the Khārijite revolted at al-Bawāzīj, as we have mentioned, the Khurāsān road belonged to Bundār and Muẓaffar b. Saysal, and they were at al-Daskara. News came to Bundār that Musāwir was marching to Karkh Ḥaddān. Muẓaffar said, "We should march against him." But Bundār said to Muẓaffar, "It is already evening, and tomorrow is the festival. Once we have observed the festival, we will march against him." Bundār then set out, hoping that the victory would be his, and he travelled by night until he overlooked Musāwir's camp. One of his companions advised him to attack them by night, but he refused and said, "Not until I see them and they see me." The Khārijites became aware of him, mounted, and they fought. Bundār had three hundred horsemen with him, while the Khārijites had seven hundred. The fighting between them intensified. The Khārijites charged once and cut off more than a hundred of Bundār's companions, but those men stood fast and fought them until they were all killed. Then Bundār and his companions fled, and the Khārijites cut them down piece by piece until they killed them. Bundār plunged deep into flight, but they pursued him, caught up with him, and killed him. They raised his head on a spear. About fifty of his companions escaped, though some said a hundred. When the news reached Muẓaffar, he departed towards Baghdad. Musāwir marched towards Ḥulwān, whose inhabitants fought him. He killed four hundred people of them, and they killed a group of his companions. He also killed a number of the Khurāsān pilgrims who were at Ḥulwān and who had helped its inhabitants. Then they withdrew from him. Ibn Musāwir said concerning that: I bereaved Iraq of its Bundār and seized the lands with their regions, and Ḥulwān I raided at dawn, so I slaughtered the inexperienced among its deceivers; then at Mosul I stoned him afterwards and encircled him with humiliation in its fortress.
