✧ The Strife in the Districts of Mosul In the year two hundred and fifty-three, there was a war between Sulaymān b. ʿImrān al-Azdī and ʿAnaza. Its cause was that Sulaymān bought a tract of land in al-Marj, and a man of ʿAnaza named Barhūna demanded the right of preemption from him, but he did not grant it to him. So Barhūna went to ʿAnaza, who were between the two Zābs, and sought the protection of them and of Banū Shaybān. A great host gathered with him, and they plundered the districts and committed excesses. Sulaymān gathered forces against them at Mosul and marched to them. He crossed the Zāb, and there was a fierce war between them, in which many were killed. Victory was Sulaymān's. He slew a great slaughter of them at Bāb Shamʿūn and brought more than two hundred of their heads into Mosul. Ḥafṣ b. ʿAmr al-Bāhilī recited an ode mentioning the battle, the beginning of which is: Nizār witnessed our stations and praised the charges of every noble, mighty champion. They came and we came—you did not repel our serpent—with blows that make skulls fly from bodies. It is long. Another strife in the districts of Mosul In this year there was also, in the districts of Mosul, a strife and war in which al-Ḥabbāb b. Bukayr al-Talīdī was killed. The reason for that was that Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sayyid b. Anas al-Talīdī al-Azdī had bought two villages that Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Talīdī had pledged to him. The owner of the two villages disliked that he should buy them, and he complained of that to al-Ḥabbāb b. Bukayr. Al-Ḥabbāb said to him: "Bring me a letter from Bughā so that I may prevent their sale." He gave him mounts and provisions, and he went down to Sāmarrāʾ and brought a letter from Bughā to al-Ḥabbāb ordering him to restrain Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sayyid from the two villages. He did so, and sent someone to the two villages to prevent Muḥammad from them. There were exchanges of messages between them, and they made peace. While Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Sayyid and al-Ḥabbāb were in the garden over a drink of theirs, with a singing-girl with them, al-Ḥabbāb said to her: "Sing these verses:" When will you combine a pure heart and a sharp sword and a proud nose? Then wrongs will avoid you. The girl sang, and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh became angry and said to her: "Rather, sing:" You have lied, by the House of God, you shall not take it in defiance as long as the sword has a hilt. No peace until white blades clash with spears and skulls are struck with light helmets. They parted, each of them bearing malice against the other. Al-Ḥabbāb renewed the legal agency over the two villages. Muḥammad gathered a force. Messengers went back and forth for peace, and they agreed to it, and Muḥammad dispersed his force. Then it was reported to Muḥammad that al-Ḥabbāb had said: "If Muḥammad had even four men with him, he would not have agreed to peace." He became angry at that, gathered a great host, and marched hastily against al-Ḥabbāb. Al-Ḥabbāb went out to meet him unprepared. They fought, and al-Ḥabbāb was killed, along with a son of his and a group of his companions. That was in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year.
