✧ The Killing of Waṣīf In the year two hundred and fifty-three, and with three nights remaining of Shawwāl, Waṣīf was killed. He was a great commander and had served a group of the caliphs. Hilāl b. al-Muḥsin al-Ṣābīʾ related that one of the elders of Qumm said: Waṣīf al-Turkī came to us as governor over our town, and we met him. We found him intelligent and sagacious. He asked us about the affairs of our town and its people with the questioning of one knowledgeable about it, and he asked us about the elders of the town, until he came to the mention of a man who was not well-known, and none of us knew him except one man who was with us. Then he followed the mention of him by extolling his standing, and he inquired about his son and his circumstances of livelihood, and he prolonged that at great length until we thought him foolish in it. Then he said: 'Bring him to me gently, for I dislike to send for him and have him be alarmed.' So we brought him, and when his eye fell upon him, he rose to him and seated him with him on his seat. Then he began asking him about his wife and his children, and the old man answered him with the answer of one bewildered. Then he said to him: 'I think you have forgotten me and disclaimed knowing me.' He said: 'How could I disclaim the emir with the majesty of his rank?' He said: 'Leave that aside. Do you know me well?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'I am Waṣīf, your slave.' Then he turned to us and said: 'O elders, I am a man from al-Daylam. I grew up at such-and-such a time, and I was carried to Qazwīn when I was about ten years old. This old man bought me, and he put me with his son in the school, and he gave me a fine upbringing. Whenever something came into my hand, I left it with so-and-so the grocer in the quarter, known as so-and-so. Is he still alive?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'After I came of age, I desired the work of bearing arms. One of the soldiers saw me and said: "Would you like to come with me to Khurāsān, and I will mount you on beasts and give you arms?" I said: "I will do so, on condition that I am not a slave to you, but rather a servant who follows. If I see from you what I prefer, I will not part from you; and if that is not the case, then you have no authority over me." He said: "That is yours." So I went to the grocer and settled my account with him, took what remained with him, bought what I needed, and fled from this master of mine with the soldier to Khurāsān. Matters progressed with me until I reached this station, and I am still under the bondage of this master of mine. I ask you to ask him to sell me my freedom.' The man said: 'The emir is free for the sake of God, and I am his patron and bear his alliance and take pride in it.' Waṣīf said: 'O boy, bring three purses.' They were brought, and he handed them to the old man. Then he called for him of perfume, garments, and mounts an amount equal to the money, and he summoned his son and honored him, giving him ten thousand dirhams and garments and mounts. He summoned the grocer and gave him five hundred dinars as a gift. Then he sent money to the old man's wife and daughters, and he said to him: 'Conduct yourself in our dominion as one whose companion is your master, for I will not turn you away from any request you seek, nor will I oppose you in anything you do.' Then he said: 'O elders of Qumm, you are my elders. There is no one on earth whose right over me is more binding than yours, except that I differ from you regarding rafḍ, for I have roamed the horizons and come to know the schools, and I found no one upon your belief, and it is impossible for consensus to occur upon error and for you alone among all people to possess the truth.' The old man and his son became the chiefs of the town. The cause of his killing was that the Turks, the Farāghina, and the Ushrūsaniyya rioted and demanded their stipends for four months. Bughā, Waṣīf, and Sīmā went out to them. Waṣīf spoke to them and said: 'Take the dust; we have no money.' Bughā said: 'Yes! We will ask the Commander of the Faithful and deliberate in the house of Ashnās.' So they entered the house of Ashnās. Sīmā and Bughā went to al-Muʿtazz, while Waṣīf remained in their hands. One of them leaped upon him and struck him with a sword, another stabbed him with a knife, then they beat him with battle-axes until they killed him. They took his head and set it upon the poker of an oven. Al-Muʿtazz transferred what had been Waṣīf's to Bughā al-Sharābī, who is Bughā the Younger, and clad him with the crown and the two sashes.
