Translation

✧ The rising of Musāwir at al-Bawāzīj In the year two hundred and fifty-two (in Rajab), Musāwir b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Musāwir al-Shārī al-Bajalī al-Mawṣilī rose at al-Bawāzīj. To his grandfather is ascribed the Funduq Musāwir in al-Mawṣil. The cause of his rising was that the shurṭa of al-Mawṣil—which was administered for the Banū ʿImrān, the governors of al-Mawṣil—seized a man named Ḥusayn b. Bukayr. He took a son of this Musāwir named Ḥawthara and imprisoned him at al-Ḥadītha. Ḥawthara was handsome, and this Ḥusayn used to bring him out of prison by night and have him attend him, then return him to prison by day. So Ḥawthara wrote to his father Musāwir, who was at al-Bawāzīj, saying to him: "By day I am imprisoned and by night I am a bridegroom." At that he became angry and disturbed, and he rose. A group pledged allegiance to him, and he made for al-Ḥadītha. Ḥusayn b. Bukayr hid, and Musāwir brought his son Ḥawthara out of prison. His following grew numerous from the Kurds and the Bedouin, and he marched on to al-Mawṣil and encamped on the eastern side. The governor of it was ʿUqba b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath b. Ahbān al-Khuzāʿī. Ahbān is said to have been the one who spoke with the wolf, and he was a Companion. ʿUqba faced him from the western side, and two men from the people of al-Mawṣil crossed the Tigris to Musāwir and fought and were killed. Musāwir returned, disliking the fighting. Ḥawthara b. Musāwir was with them, and he was heard saying: I am the youth, the Bajalī, the Shārī; your oppression drove me from my home.
