Translation
✧ THE DISTURBANCE IN BAGHDAD In the year 249 AH, the troops and the Shākiriyya rioted in Baghdad. The reason was that when news reached them, and Samarra and its environs, of the killing of ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh and ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā—both of whom were among the brave men of Islam, of great might and great service to the Muslims on the frontiers—it was hard for them, especially as the killing of one came so soon after the other, and because they were horrified by the Turks’ killing of al-Mutawakkil and their seizing control of Muslim affairs, (killing whichever caliphs they wished and appointing whomever they pleased, without any piety or regard for the Muslims). The common people gathered in Baghdad with shouting and calls to arms, and the abnāʾ and Shākiriyya joined them, ostensibly demanding their allowances. This was at the beginning of Safar. They opened the prisons and released those inside, burned one of the two bridges and cut the other, and looted the houses of Bishr and Ibrāhīm, the two sons of Hārūn, the secretaries of Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh. Then the wealthy people of Baghdad and Samarra brought out much money and distributed it among those who marched to the frontiers. The masses came from the regions of al-Jibāl, Fārs, al-Ahwāz, and elsewhere to raid the Byzantines, because the caliph and the army had delayed in setting out. The common people were angered by that and did what we have described.
