✧ The raid against the Byzantines and the killing of ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā al-Armanī In the year 249 AH, Jaʿfar b. Dīnār raided the summer expedition, and he conquered a fortress and underground granaries. ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Aqṭaʿ asked his permission to march into Byzantine territory, and he permitted him. He set out with a great multitude of the people of Malaṭya. The king met him with a huge host of Byzantines at Marj al-Asquf, and he fought him a fierce battle in which many of both parties were killed. Then the Byzantines surrounded him, and they were fifty thousand, and ʿUmar and two thousand Muslims with him were killed in mid-Rajab. When ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd Allāh was killed, the Byzantines came out to the Jazīran frontier fortresses and fell upon them and upon the Muslims' wealth and their women. This reached ʿAlī b. Yaḥyā while he was returning from Armenia to Mayyāfāriqīn with a group of its people and the people of al-Silsila. He went out against them, and he was killed along with about four hundred men, and that was in the month of Ramaḍān. To God we belong and to Him we return. These two commanders had been among the greatest supporters of Islam.
