Translation
✧ Then the year two hundred and two entered. Mention of the bayʿah of Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī In this year, the people of Baghdādh gave the bayʿah to Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī for the caliphate, and they titled him al-Mubārak. His bayʿah was on the first day of al-Muḥarram—or it is said on its fifth—and they deposed al-Maʾmūn. The rest of the Banū Hāshim gave him the bayʿah. The one who undertook receiving the bayʿah was al-Muṭṭalib b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik. Those involved in this matter were al-Sindī, Ṣāliḥ the master of the prayer-place, Nuṣayr the servant, and others, in anger at al-Maʾmūn when he wanted to remove the caliphate from the descendants of al-ʿAbbās, and because he abandoned the dress of his forefathers, namely black. When the bayʿah was completed, he promised the troops six months' provision, but he delayed them with it. They rioted against him, so he gave each man two hundred dirhams, and he wrote for some of them to al-Sawād for the value of [the remainder of] what they were owed in wheat and barley. They went out to collect it, and they plundered everything, taking the share of the sultan and the people of al-Sawād. Ibrāhīm took control of al-Kūfah and all of al-Sawād, he encamped at al-Madāʾin, and he appointed al-ʿAbbās b. Mūsā al-Hādī over the western side of Baghdādh, and Isḥāq b. Mūsā al-Hādī over its eastern side. Mahdī b. ʿUlwān al-Ḥarūrī rose against him and gained control over the rural districts of Nahr Būqā and al-Rādhānayn. Ibrāhīm sent against him Abū Isḥāq b. al-Rashīd—he is al-Muʿtaṣim—with a group of commanders. They met him and fought. A man from his companions stabbed Ibn al-Rashīd, and a Turkish ghulām called Ashnās defended him. Mahdī was defeated towards Ḥawlāyā. It is said: the rising of Mahdī was in the year two hundred and three.
