✧ Mention of Ibrāhīm’s seizure of the palace of Ibn Hubayrah In the palace of Ibn Hubayrah was Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, governor for al-Ḥasan b. Sahl, and with him among the commanders were Saʿīd b. al-Sājūr, Abū al-Baṭṭ, Ghassān b. Abī al-Faraj, Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Ifrīqī, and others. They wrote to Ibrāhīm agreeing to seize the palace of Ibn Hubayrah for him. They had turned against Ḥumayd, and they wrote to al-Ḥasan b. Sahl informing him that Ḥumayd was corresponding with Ibrāhīm. Ḥumayd likewise wrote about them in the same way. Al-Ḥasan wrote to Ḥumayd summoning him to come to him, but he did not do so, fearing that if he went to him these commanders would seize his wealth and his army and hand him over to Ibrāhīm. When al-Ḥasan persisted in writing to him, he set out to him in Rabīʿ II. Those commanders wrote to Ibrāhīm to send them ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad b. Abī Khālid, so he dispatched him to them. They plundered what was in Ḥumayd’s camp, and among what they took for him were a hundred purses. Ibn Ḥumayd took his father’s slave girls and went to him while he was with al-Ḥasan’s army. ʿĪsā entered the palace and took possession of it on the 10th of Rabīʿ II. Ḥumayd said to al-Ḥasan: Did I not inform you? But you were deceived. He returned to al-Kūfah, took his wealth, appointed over it al-ʿAbbās b. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar al-ʿAlawī, and ordered him to summon to his brother ʿAlī b. Mūsā after al-Maʾmūn. He assisted him with a hundred thousand dirhams and said to him: Fight on behalf of your brother, for the people of al-Kūfah will respond to you in that, and I am with you. When night came, Ḥumayd went out to al-Ḥasan. Al-Ḥasan had sent Ḥakīm al-Ḥārithī to al-Nīl. ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad marched against him, and they fought. Ḥakīm was defeated, and ʿĪsā entered al-Nīl. Ibrāhīm sent Saʿīd and Abū al-Baṭṭ to al-Kūfah to fight al-ʿAbbās b. Mūsā. Al-ʿAbbās had summoned the people of al-Kūfah, and some of them answered him. As for the extremists among the Shīʿah, they said: If you summon us to your brother alone, we are with you; but as for al-Maʾmūn, we have no need of him. He said: I summon only to al-Maʾmūn, and after him to my brother. So they held back from him. When Saʿīd and Abū al-Baṭṭ came to him and camped at the village of Shāhī, al-ʿAbbās sent against them his cousin ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar—who was the son of the one to whom allegiance had been given in Makkah—and sent with him a group, among them the brother of Abū al-Sarāyā. They fought for a while, and ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-ʿAlawī and the people of al-Kūfah were defeated. Saʿīd and his companions encamped at al-Ḥīrah, and that was on the 2nd of Jumādā I. Then they advanced and fought the people of al-Kūfah. The Shīʿah of the Banū al-ʿAbbās and their clients went out, and they fought until night. Their battle cry was: O Abū Ibrāhīm! O Manṣūr! No obedience to al-Maʾmūn! They wore black, and the people of al-Kūfah wore green. The next day they fought, and each party of them, when it gained the upper hand over something, burned it and plundered it. When the notables of the people of al-Kūfah saw that, they went out to Saʿīd and asked him for safe conduct for al-ʿAbbās and his companions. He granted them safety on condition that they leave al-Kūfah, and they agreed to that. Then they came to al-ʿAbbās and informed him of that, and he accepted it from them and moved from his house. The companions of al-ʿAbbās b. Mūsā rioted against those remaining of Saʿīd’s companions and fought them. Saʿīd’s companions fled to the trench, and al-ʿAbbās’s companions plundered the houses of ʿĪsā b. Mūsā and burned them, and killed whomever they caught. The ʿAbbāsid partisans sent to Saʿīd, while he was at al-Ḥīrah, informing him that al-ʿAbbās b. Mūsā had reneged on the safe conduct. Saʿīd and his companions mounted and came to al-Kūfah at nightfall. They killed whomever they caught among those who had plundered and burned what they had of the loot. They remained most of the night. The notables of al-Kūfah went out to them and informed them that this was the doing of the rabble and that al-ʿAbbās had not reneged on the safe conduct, so they withdrew from them. The next day Saʿīd and Abū al-Baṭṭ entered the city and proclaimed a general amnesty. They did not molest anyone. They appointed over al-Kūfah al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad b. al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Kindī, then dismissed him because of his partiality to the people of his town, and appointed in his place Ghassān b. Abī al-Faraj. Then they dismissed him after he killed Abū ʿAbd Allāh, the brother of Abū al-Sarāyā, and appointed al-Hawl, the nephew of Saʿīd. He remained over it until Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd arrived there, and al-Hawl fled. Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī ordered ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad to march to the district of Wāsiṭ by way of al-Nīl, and ordered Ibn ʿĀʾishah al-Hāshimī and Nuʿaym b. Ḥāzim to march together. Saʿīd, Abū al-Baṭṭ, and al-Ifrīqī joined them, and they all camped at al-Ṣayyādah, near Wāsiṭ, with ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad in command of them all. They used to ride out and come to al-Ḥasan’s camp at Wāsiṭ, but no one came out against them, as they were fortified within the city. Then al-Ḥasan ordered his companions to go out against them. They went out against them on the 4th night remaining of Rajab, and they fought a fierce battle until noon. ʿĪsā and his companions were defeated, fleeing until they reached Ṭirnāyā and al-Nīl, and they plundered ʿĪsā’s camp and what was in it.
