Tarikh (al-Tabari) 3089

The year 195 AH

Translation

✧ Then the year 195 AH began. Among the events in it: That al-Amīn ordered the dropping of the dirhams and dinars that had been struck for his brother in Khurasan in the year 194. The reason for that was that al-Maʾmūn ordered that the name of Muḥammad not be inscribed on them, so they were not valid for a time. In it: he forbade supplication from the pulpits in all his realm for al-Maʾmūn and al-Qāsim, and ordered supplication for himself, then for his son Mūsā, and that was in Ṣafar of this year. Mūsā was a small child, and that was according to the opinion of al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ. That reached al-Maʾmūn, so he was called Imām of the Believers, and correspondence was made with that. When Muḥammad resolved to depose al-Maʾmūn, al-Faḍl said to him: Will you not make an excuse to him [O Commander of the Believers] perhaps he will surrender the matter in safety, so you write him a letter and ask him for pardon for what is in his hands. Ismāʿīl b. Ṣubayḥ said to him: This is a strengthening to them, but write to him and inform him of your love for his nearness. So he wrote to him: I love your nearness so that you may assist me. He wrote to him: My place is more beneficial to the Commander of the Believers. Then he summoned al-Faḍl and said: What do you think? He said: That you keep your position. He said: How? With the opposition of Muḥammad, and the wealth and the army are with him, and the kings around me are all enemies to me. He said: You reconcile between me and them. When al-Amīn knew that he would not come to him, he sent ʿIṣma b. Ḥammād to him and ordered him to cut off provisions from Khurasan.
