Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 1063 - Salm b. Sālim, Abū Muḥammad – and it is said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān – al-Balkhī. He came to Baghdad and related from Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān and [from] al-Thawrī. From him related: al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah. He was renowned for devout worship and asceticism. He remained forty years without a bed being seen for him, and he was never seen breaking his fast except on the day of Fiṭr or Aḍḥā, and he did not raise his head to the sky for more than forty years. He was a summoner to irjāʾ, and he was stern in commanding right and forbidding wrong. He entered Baghdad and denounced al-Rashīd, so al-Rashīd seized him, imprisoned him, and bound him with twelve shackles. Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr denounced al-Rashīd over him until four remained. In his imprisonment he used to supplicate, saying: “O God, do not make my death in his prison, and do not cause me to die until I meet my family.” Then al-Rashīd died, and Zubaydah released him. He went out to perform the pilgrimage and met his family in Makkah when they had arrived as pilgrims. He fell ill and craved cold (food/drink), so they gathered [some] for him, and he ate and died. That was in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. The ḥadīth scholars have concurred on declaring his transmissions weak. 1064 - ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. ʿAbd al-Majīd b. al-Ṣalt b. Muḥammad al-Thaqafī al-Baṣrī. He was born in the year 108 – and it is said: in the year 110 – and he heard Ayyūb al-Sijistānī, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, Khālid al-Ḥaddād, and others. From him related: al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad, Ibn Rāhawayh, Yaḥyā, and others. He was trustworthy, except that he became confused at the end of his life. ʿAmr b. ʿAlī said: The annual revenue of ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. ʿAbd al-Majīd was between forty thousand and fifty thousand each year, and when the year had passed he would spend it on the ḥadīth scholars, so that nothing of it remained. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb died in this year, at the age of eighty-four. 1065 - Abū Naṣr al-Juhanī al-Muṣāb. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Abī Fudayk said: There was among us a man called Abū Naṣr from Juhaynah, whose mind had gone, in a way different from what people are in. He would not speak until he was spoken to. He used to sit with the people of the ṣuffah at the rear of the mosque of the Messenger of God ﷺ. When he was asked about something he would give a good, extraordinary answer. One day I came to him while he was in the back of the mosque with the people of the ṣuffah, his head bowed, his forehead placed between his knees. I sat beside him and nudged him, and he woke with a start. I gave him something I had with me, and he took it and said: “A need has befallen us.” I said to him: “O Abū Naṣr, what is nobility (al-sharaf)?” He said: “Bearing what befalls the clan, its nearest and its farthest, accepting from its doer of good, and overlooking its evildoer.” I said to him: “What is generosity (al-sakhāʾ)?” He said: “The effort of one of little means.” I said: “What is miserliness (al-bukhl)?” He said: “Uff,” and turned his face away from me. I said: “Will you answer me?” He said: “I have answered you.” Hārūn al-Rashīd came to us, and the mosque was emptied for him. He stood at the grave of the Messenger of God ﷺ and at his pulpit, and at the standing place of Jibrīl ﷺ, and he embraced the pillar of prophethood, then he said: “Take me to the people of the ṣuffah.” When he came to them, Abū Naṣr was nudged and it was said: “He is the Commander of the Faithful.” He raised his head and said: “O man, between the servants of God, the community of His Prophet, and your subjects, and God there is no creature other than you, and God will ask you about them, so prepare an answer for the question. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: ‘If a lamb were lost on the bank of the Euphrates, ʿUmar would fear that God would ask him about it.’” Hārūn wept and said: “O Abū Naṣr, my subjects are not the subjects of ʿUmar, and my age is not the age of ʿUmar.” He said to him: “By God, this does not avail you. Look to yourself, for you and ʿUmar will both be asked about what God has entrusted to you.” Hārūn called for a purse containing three hundred dinars and said: “Give it to Abū Naṣr.” Abū Naṣr said: “I am only a man of the people of the ṣuffah, so give it to so-and-so to distribute among them and count me as one of them.” Abū Naṣr used to go out every Friday at dawn prayer, entering the market from the side of the mountain pass. He would keep stopping at each open square and saying: “O people, fear a day when no soul will avail another soul in anything, and no ransom will be accepted from it, and no intercession will benefit it. When a servant dies, his family, wealth, and deeds accompany him. When he is placed in his grave, his family and wealth return, and his deeds remain. So choose for yourselves what will keep you company in your graves, may God have mercy on you.” He would keep doing that in square after square until he reached the prayer place of the Messenger of God ﷺ, then he would pray the Friday prayer, and he would not leave the mosque until he had prayed the last evening prayer (al-ʿishāʾ al-ākhirah). In this year died al-Walīd b. Muslim, the companion of al-Awzāʿī, and it is said in the year 195, and his birth was in the year 110. In it died Ḥafṣ b. Ghiyāth al-Nakhaʿī, the qāḍī of Kufa, and his birth was in the year 117. (Ghiyāth is with the dotted ghayn.) In it died Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd b. Abān b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, at the age of seventy-four.
