Tarikh (al-Tabari) 3022

Then the year 182 AH began

Translation

✧ Al-Rashīd took the oath of allegiance for his son ʿAbd Allāh al-Maʾmūn as heir apparent after his brother Muḥammad b. Zubaydah al-Amīn. That was at al-Raqqah after his return from the pilgrimage. In the year 182 AH, al-Rashīd pledged allegiance to ʿAbd Allāh al-Maʾmūn as heir apparent after al-Amīn, appointed him over Khurāsān and what is connected to it as far as Hamadhān, gave him the title al-Maʾmūn, and handed him over to Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā. (This is one of the wonders, for al-Rashīd had seen what his father and his grandfather al-Manṣūr had done with ʿĪsā b. Mūsā, until he removed himself from the succession, and what his brother al-Hādī did to make him remove himself from the succession; had death not overtaken him quickly he would have removed him. Then he pledges allegiance to al-Maʾmūn after al-Amīn; love for a thing blinds and deafens.) Then he sent him to the City of Peace, and with him from his household were Jaʿfar b. al-Manṣūr and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Ṣāliḥ, and from the commanders ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā. Allegiance was sworn to him in the City of Peace when al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ṣabbāḥ al-Zaʿfarānī arrived there. He said: When al-Shāfiʿī came to Baghdad, it coincided with al-Rashīd's contract for al-Amīn and al-Maʾmūn [for the succession]. He said: The people went early to congratulate al-Rashīd, and they sat in the public hall waiting for permission. He said: People began to say: How should we pray for the two of them? If we do that, it would be a prayer against the caliph, and if we do not pray for them, it would be a shortcoming. He said: Al-Shāfiʿī ؓ entered and sat down, and he was asked about that. He said: "God is the one who grants success." When permission was given, the people entered, and the first to speak was al-Shāfiʿī ؓ, and he said: No shortcoming in it, nor have I reached the two of them—until their long life extends under your hands.
