فَقَالَتْ: هَذَا وَلَدِي، مَرَّ بِنَا الْبَارِحَةَ رَجُلٌ - لَا جَزَاهُ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا - فَقَرَأَ آيَةً فِيهَا ذِكْرُ النَّارِ، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ وَلَدِي يَضْطَرِبُ وَيَبْكِي ✧ Those of the notable figures who died in this year: Al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah b. Shabīb b. Khālid b. Maʿdān, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah b. Shabīb b. Khālid b. Maʿdān, Abū al-Ḥasan, and he was the brother of Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭabah. Al-Ḥasan was one of the commanders of the [Abbasid] state. He died in this year at the age of eighty-four. Khalaf b. Khalīfah b. Ṣāʿid, Abū Aḥmad al-Ashjaʿī Khalaf b. Khalīfah b. Ṣāʿid, Abū Aḥmad al-Ashjaʿī. Narrated from him: Hushaym, Qutaybah, and al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah. He was trustworthy and truthful. He settled in Kufa, then moved to Wasit, then moved to Baghdad and resided there until he died in this year at the age of one hundred and six. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Marwazī, client of Banū Ḥanẓalah ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Marwazī, client of Banū Ḥanẓalah. His father was a Turk [and was a slave of a man from among the merchants] from Hamadan of Banū Ḥanẓalah, and ʿAbd Allāh, when he came to Hamadan, would humble himself before his parents and honor them, and his mother was a Khwarizmian. He was born in the year 118 AH, and he heard Ḥishām b. ʿUrwah, Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, al-Aʿmash, Sulaymān al-Taymī, Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, Ibn ʿAwn, Mālik, al-Thawrī, al-Awzāʿī, and others. He was among the imams of the Muslims described with memorization, jurisprudence, determination, asceticism, generosity, and courage. He has excellent writings and poetry containing asceticism and wisdom. He was among the people of raiding and garrison duty. Ibn ʿUyaynah used to say: "I considered the state of the Companions and the state of Ibn al-Mubārak, and I did not see them having any superiority over him except by their companionship of the Prophet ﷺ." On the authority of Muʿādh b. Khālid, he said: Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh said: "There is none on the face of the earth like ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak, and I do not know that Allah created any trait of the traits of good except that He placed it in ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak. My companions narrated to me that they accompanied him from Egypt to Makkah, and he would feed them the sweet dish while he was fasting all the time." On the authority of Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī, he said: I heard ʿAbdah b. Sulaymān saying: "We were in a military expedition with Ibn al-Mubārak in the lands of the Byzantines, and we encountered the enemy. When the two ranks met, a man from the enemy came out and called for single combat. A man went out to him and fought him for a while, then stabbed him and killed him. Then another came out and he killed him. Then another came out and he killed him. Then he called for single combat, and a man went out to him and fought him for a while and killed him. People crowded around him, and I was among those who crowded around him, and he was kissing his face with his sleeve. I took hold of the edge of his sleeve and pulled it, and it was ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak. He said: 'And you, O Abū ʿAmr, are among those who expose us?'" On the authority of Muḥammad b. Jibrīl, he said: I heard Abū Ḥassān al-Baṣrī saying: I heard al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafah saying: Ibn al-Mubārak said: "I borrowed a pen in the land of Syria, and it slipped my mind to return it to its owner. When I arrived at Merv I looked and it was with me. So I returned, O Abū ʿAlī, to [the land of] Syria until I returned it to its owner." On the authority of Ashʿath b. Shuʿbah al-Miṣṣīṣī, he said: Hārūn al-Rashīd, Commander of the Faithful, arrived at al-Raqqah [and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak arrived after him], and the people flocked behind ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak, sandals were cut, and dust rose. A concubine of the Commander of the Faithful looked out from a tower of the wooden palace. When she saw the people, she said: "What is this?" They said: "A scholar from the people of Khurasan has arrived at al-Raqqah, called ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak." She said: "This, by Allah, is kingship, not the kingship of Hārūn, which does not gather the people except with a whip and helpers." On the authority of Nuʿaym b. Ḥammād, he said: Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, saying: "I came to Maʿmar and heard from him, and I ordered for him a slave girl and fifty dinars. Then I bade him farewell and departed. When I was one stage away, a man reminded me of a hadith from him that I had not heard from him, so I said: 'I did not hear this from him.' He said: 'Go back, for you are near to him.' I said: 'After I have given him a gift, I will not go back, for there would be a slight upon him that I return to him after the gift. You narrate it to me from him.' So he narrated it to me from him." Al-Ḥākim said with his chain of transmission: I heard ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak saying: "I do not think that the owner of ten thousand dirhams should abandon earning, for if he does not, I am not confident that he will not turn away from his neighbor nor provide ease for his family." Al-Ḥākim said with his chain of transmission on the authority of Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥadathī, he said: My father narrated to me from a man whom he named, that ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak used to stay with him on some occasions, and with him were brothers of his. He complained to me of celibacy and ordered me to buy a slave girl for him. He said: So I bought a [slave girl] for him and presented her to him, and he approved of her, and said: "Send her to the lodging." He said: So I brought her to my family, and she stayed until she menstruated and became pure. I informed him of that, and he said to me: "Send her tonight." So I came to my daughters and informed them, and they went to her and combed her hair and prepared her. He said: When he prayed the last evening prayer, I sent her to him. When morning came, he said to the slave girl: "Go to the family of so-and-so." He said: The slave girl came, and my daughters and their mother asked her about her state. She said: "He did not lay his hand on me." He said: So I went to him in the morning and said: "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, you complained to me of celibacy, and you ordered me and I bought a slave girl for you, and I presented her to you and you approved of her, and my daughters prepared her, and the mother of so-and-so informed me that you did not lay your hand on her?!" He said to me: "O Abū so-and-so, the truth is what I told you about the severity of celibacy, but when I was alone with her, I remembered my brothers, and I deemed it blameworthy to attain a desire that they would not attain, while there is not in my right hand what would suffice them. Take out the slave girl and sell her." In the meaning of this story is the saying of the poet: And my leaving off sharing with friends what my hand attains is injustice to them and disobedience. And indeed I would be ashamed before people to be seen in a state of ease while the friend is in straits. Al-Ḥākim said with his chain of transmission on the authority of Yaʿqūb [b. Isḥāq b. Ayyūb] al-Shaybānī, saying: I heard my father relating from his father, he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Mubārak used to perform the pilgrimage, and with him were loads, boxes, and many servants. With one of his servants was a partridge. When they departed from the stopping place, their baggage arrived, and the owner of the partridge looked at the partridge and it was dead. He threw it on a rubbish heap, and near the rubbish heap was a small door. ʿAbd Allāh was standing by his mount, and he saw a young girl putting out her head and drawing back, seeking an opportunity so that no one would see her. ʿAbd Allāh pretended not to notice her. She came out in her waist-wrapper with no shirt or head-covering, and she carried that partridge, and entered the house running. ʿAbd Allāh said to a servant of his: "Dismount and knock on this door." The servant dismounted and did what he ordered him. That girl came out, and ʿAbd Allāh asked her about her condition and her story and the story of the dead partridge—why did she carry it? She said: "O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, I and a sister of mine are in this room. We have nothing in this world except this single waist-wrapper. Our father was a wealthy man [who died], and we were wronged and our wealth was seized by force. We remained in a state that makes [eating] carrion lawful for us. There is nothing in our house except this waist-wrapper. When I wear it, my sister remains naked. It is our clothing, our bed, and our covering." ʿAbd Allāh said to her: "Do you have no guardian?" She said: "No, by Allah." ʿAbd Allāh felt compassion for her, then said to his servant: "Go and bring back the baggage." He brought it back. He asked his agent: "Where is the money?" He said: "On my waist." He had been carrying a thousand dinars. He said: "O boy, count out twenty dinars for our expenses to Merv, and pour the rest into the waist-wrapper of this girl." The servant did that. When he returned to the stopping place, it was said to him: "What made you return?" He said: "I encountered what is better than the pilgrimage." And he returned to Merv. Muḥammad b. al-Mundhir said with his chain of transmission on the authority of al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan, saying: We were sitting with Ibn al-Mubārak when a beggar came and asked him for something. He said: "O boy, give him a dirham." When the beggar turned away, one of his companions said to him: "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, these beggars lunch on roast meat and fālūdhaj! A piece would have sufficed him. Why did you order a dirham for him?" Ibn al-Mubārak said: "O boy, call him back. I only thought that they suffice with greens and vinegar for their lunch. But if their lunch is roast meat and fālūdhaj, then ten dirhams are necessary. O boy, give him ten dirhams." On the authority of Sufyān al-Thawrī, he said: "Indeed I strive to be for three days in a state that Ibn al-Mubārak is in for a year, but I am not able." Ibn al-Mubārak died at Hīt, in Ramadan of this year, at the age of sixty-three. ʿĪsā b. Abī Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr ʿĪsā b. Abī Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr. He died in Baghdad in Dhu al-Qaʿdah of this year. ʿAlī b. Hāshim b. al-Barīd, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Khazzāz ʿAlī b. Hāshim b. al-Barīd, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Khazzāz. The Kufan. He came to Baghdad and narrated there from Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid and al-Aʿmash. Narrated from him: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. They agreed that he [was] trustworthy, [but] he was a Shīʿī. He died in this year. Al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah b. ʿUbayd, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ruʿaynī al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah b. ʿUbayd, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ruʿaynī, then al-Qitbānī. He was born in the year 107 AH. He held the judiciary in Egypt twice. He was among the people of religion, jurisprudence, piety, and answered supplication. He supplicated to Allah to remove hope from him, and He removed it from him, and his intellect nearly vanished and nothing of the world pleased him. Then he supplicated to Allah to return it to him, and He returned it, and he returned to his state. Ibn Rumḥ said: There was a dispute between me and a neighbor of mine regarding a wall. My mother said: "Go to the judge al-Mufaḍḍal b. Faḍālah and say to him: 'My mother says to you: I would like you to come and look at this wall, whether it is ours or our neighbor's.'" So I went and informed him, and he said: "Wait for me after the afternoon prayer until I come to you." So I waited for him, and he came and entered our house, then entered our neighbor's house, and looked, then said: "The wall belongs to your neighbor." Then he left. He died in Shawwal of this year. Yaʿqūb al-ʿĀbid al-Kūfī Yaʿqūb al-ʿĀbid al-Kūfī. On the authority of Manṣūr b. ʿAmmār, he said: I went out one night and thought that I had reached morning, but it was still night upon me. I sat at a small door, and there was the voice of a young man weeping and saying: "By Your might and majesty, I did not intend by my disobedience to oppose You. I disobeyed You when I disobeyed You, and I am not ignorant of Your punishment, nor do I expose myself to Your retribution, nor do I make light of Your observation. But my soul tempted me, and my wretchedness overcame me, and Your covering spread over me deceived me. I disobeyed You when I disobeyed You through my ignorance, and I opposed You with my effort. Now, from Your punishment, who will rescue me? And to whose rope will I cling if You cut Your rope from me? What disgrace upon what has passed of my days in disobedience to my Lord! Woe to me! How often I repent and how often I return! It is time for me to be ashamed before my Lord." Manṣūr said: When I heard his speech, I said: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful: 'O you who believe, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are angels, harsh and severe'..." the verse. Then I heard a voice and a severe disturbance. I went on to my business. When morning came, I returned, and there was a funeral at the door and an old woman going back and forth. I said to her: "Who is the deceased?" She said: "Go away from me, do not renew my sorrows." I said: "I am a stranger." She said: "This is my son. Last night a man passed by us—may Allah not reward him—and recited a verse mentioning the Fire. My son did not cease trembling and weeping until he died." Manṣūr said: "Thus, by Allah, is the description of the fearful, O Ibn ʿAmmār." Ḥamzah b. Mālik and Ḥamzah b. Mālik. He held the governorship of Khurasan in the days of al-Rashīd.
