Translation
✧ In the year one hundred and eighty AH Discord stirred in Syria between the Nizāriyyah and the Yamāniyyah, and al-Rashīd was disturbed by that, so he delegated Jaʿfar al-Barmakī to Syria with a group of commanders and troops. He entered Syria, and the people submitted to him. Jaʿfar did not leave in Syria a horse, a sword, or a spear without seizing it from the people. By him God extinguished the fire of that discord. Some poets said about that: Fires of discord were kindled in Syria; this is the time for Syria's fire to be quenched, when the waves of the sea surge from the house of Barmak. Upon them its flames and sparks subsided; the Commander of the Faithful cast at it Jaʿfar. In him its fracture and its mending meet; he cast at it one auspicious in disposition, glorious, Whom its Qaḥṭān and Nizār accepted. Then Jaʿfar returned to Baghdad after he had appointed ʿĪsā b. al-ʿAkkī as his deputy over Syria. When he arrived, he entered upon al-Rashīd and kissed his hands and feet, and said: Praise be to God, who comforted my loneliness and prolonged my term until He showed me the face of my master and honored me with his nearness, and returned me to his service. By God, I used to recall my absence and the decrees that disturbed me, and I knew that they were due to sins that attached to me. Had my stay been prolonged, I would have feared that my mind would go out of anxiety for your nearness and grief at separation from you.
