Translation
✧ The governorship of ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā over Khurasan. In the year one hundred and eighty, al-Rashīd dismissed Manṣūr b. Yazīd from Khurasan and appointed over it ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā b. Māhān, who governed it for ten years. During his governorship, Ḥamza b. Aturk al-Khārijī also came out. He came to Būshanj, and ʿAmrawayh b. Yazīd al-Azdī, who was over Herat, went out against him with six thousand men and fought him. Ḥamza defeated him and killed a group of his companions. ʿAmrawayh died in the crush. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā sent his son al-Ḥusayn against him with ten thousand men, but he did not fight Ḥamza, so he dismissed him and sent in his place his son ʿĪsā b. ʿAlī. He fought Ḥamza, and Ḥamza defeated him. His father sent him back against him again, and he fought him at Bākharz. Ḥamza was at Naysābūr, and Ḥamza was defeated, his companions were killed, and he remained with forty men. He headed for Quhistān. ʿĪsā sent his companions to Ūq and Juwayn, and they killed the Kharijites who were there. He headed for the villages whose people were supporting Ḥamza, burned them, and killed those in them until he reached Zaranj. He killed thirty thousand and returned. He left behind in Zaranj ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās al-Nasafī, who collected the revenues and set out with them. Ḥamza met him at Asfizār and fought him. ʿAbd Allāh and those with him from Sughd held firm against him. Ḥamza was defeated, many of his companions were killed, he was wounded in the face, and he and those of his companions who survived hid in the vineyards. Then he emerged and went about the villages killing, sparing no one. ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā had appointed Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn over Būshanj. Ḥamza marched toward him and came upon a school with thirty boys; he killed them and their teacher. The news reached Ṭāhir, and he went to a village where the Kharijite quʿad were—those who do not fight and have no stipend register. Ṭāhir killed them and took their property. He would bind each man between two trees, then pull them together, then release them, so that each tree took half of him. The quʿad wrote to Ḥamza asking him to desist, so he desisted and made a truce with them. The people were safe for a time, and there were many wars between him and the companions of ʿAlī b. ʿĪsā.
