Then the year 147 AH began

Translation

✧ In this year: al-Manṣūr performed the pilgrimage with the people, and he seized Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī in Madinah. He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Faḍl b. al-Rabīʿ — and he did not memorize the supplication, and part of it was from someone else — said: Abū Jaʿfar performed the pilgrimage in the year one hundred and forty-seven, and he came to Madinah and said: Send to Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad someone to bring him to us exhausted; may God kill me if I do not kill him. Al-Rabīʿ pretended to overlook it so that he would forget it. Then he mentioned him again to al-Rabīʿ and said: Send to him someone to bring him exhausted. He pretended to overlook it. Then he sent to al-Rabīʿ an ugly message concerning Jaʿfar and ordered him to send to him, and he did so. When he came, he said: O Abā ʿAbd Allāh, remember God, for he has sent to you that which has no alternative. Jaʿfar said: There is no might and no power except with God, the Most High, the Magnificent. Then he informed Abū Jaʿfar of his presence. When he entered, he threatened him, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: The people of Iraq have taken you as an imam, and they collect the zakāt of their wealth to you, and you deviate in my authority and seek calamities for it; may God kill me if I do not kill you. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, Solomon ﷺ was given and he was grateful, and Job was afflicted and he was patient, and Joseph was wronged and he forgave, and you are of that stock. Abū Jaʿfar said to him: Come to me, and with me, Abā ʿAbd Allāh, you are innocent of blame, safe in quarter, of little malice; may God reward you, as a possessor of kinship, with the best reward He gives to possessors of kinship for their kin. Then he took his hand and seated him with him on his couch. Then he said: Bring the litter. He brought oil in which there was ghāliyah perfume and hung it on his hand until his beard was left dripping. Then he said: In God's protection and guardianship. Then he said: O Rabīʿ, attach to Abū ʿAbd Allāh his gift and his clothing. Depart, Abā ʿAbd Allāh, in God's protection and in His shelter. So he departed, and I caught up with him and said to him: I saw before that what you did not see, and I saw after that what you did see. What did you say, O Abā ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, when you entered? He said: I said: O God, guard me with Your eye that does not sleep, and shelter me with Your blessing that is not sought after, and have mercy on me by Your power over me, so I will not perish while You are my hope. O God, You are greater and more majestic than what I fear and am wary of. O God, by You I thrust against his chest, and I seek refuge in You from his evil.
