Then the year 147 AH began
وَفِيهَا: ضُرِبَ مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ. قال مَكِّيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ: ضُرِبَ مَالِكُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ ؓ فِي سَنَةِ سَبْعٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ وَمِائَةٍ. ضَرَبَهُ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ سَبْعِينَ سَوْطًا. قَالَ ابن الجوزي رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ: وَالسَّبَبُ فِي ضَرْبِهِ أَنَّهُمْ سَأَلُوهُ عَنْ مُبَايَعَةِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ حَسَنِ بْنِ حَسَنٍ وَقَالُوا لَهُ: إِنَّ فِي أَعْنَاقِنَا بَيْعَةَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ. فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا بَايَعْتُمْ مُكْرَهِينَ، وَلَيْسَ عَلَى مُكْرَهٍ يَمِينٌ، فَأَسْرَعَ النَّاسُ إِلَى مُحَمَّدٍ. فَلِذَلِكَ ضُرِبَ.
Translation
✧ In it, Malik b. Anas was flogged. Makki b. Ibrahim said: Malik b. Anas ؓ was flogged in the year one hundred and forty-seven. Sulayman b. ʿAli b. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbbas flogged him with seventy lashes. Ibn al-Jawzi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The reason for his flogging was that they asked him about pledging allegiance to Muhammad b. ʿAbd Allah b. Ḥasan b. Ḥasan, and they said to him: 'We have the oath of allegiance to Abu Jaʿfar upon our necks.' He said: 'You pledged only under compulsion, and there is no oath upon one compelled.' So the people hastened to Muhammad. For that reason, he was flogged.
