Translation
✧ Mention of the conquest of Tabaristan When al-Mahdi seized ʿAbd al-Jabbār without hardship or engaging in combat, al-Manṣūr disliked that the expenditures he had spent on al-Mahdi should go to waste. So he wrote to him to raid Tabaristan, to camp at al-Rayy, and to send Abū al-Khaṣīb, Khāzim b. Khuzaymah, and the troops against the Iṣbahbadh. At that time the Iṣbahbadh was fighting al-Muṣmughān, king of Dunbāwand, and was encamped opposite him. When news reached him that the troops had entered his land and that Abū al-Khaṣīb had entered Sāriyah, al-Muṣmughān said to the Iṣbahbadh: “Whenever they overcome you, they will come to me.” So they joined together to fight the Muslims. The Iṣbahbadh returned to his country and fought the Muslims. Those wars dragged on, so al-Manṣūr sent ʿUmar b. al-ʿAlāʾ to Tabaristan. He is the one about whom Bashshār said: “If the wars of the enemy wake you, rouse ʿUmar for them, then sleep.” He was knowledgeable about the lands of Tabaristan. He took the troops, headed to al-Rūyān, and conquered it. He seized the fortress of al-Ṭāq and what was in it. The war dragged on, so Khāzim persisted in fighting and conquered Tabaristan, killing many of them. The Iṣbahbadh went to his fortress and sought safe-conduct on condition that he surrender the fortress with the treasures it contained. Al-Mahdi wrote about that to al-Manṣūr, so al-Manṣūr sent Ṣāliḥ, the keeper of the prayer rug. They inventoried what was in the stronghold and departed. The Iṣbahbadh entered the land of Jīlān in al-Daylam and died there. His daughter, who was the mother of Ibrāhīm b. al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad, was taken. The troops headed for the country of al-Muṣmughān and seized him and al-Buḥturiyyah, the mother of Manṣūr b. al-Mahdi.
