✧ Mention of the deposition of ʿAbd al-Jabbār in Khurāsān and the march of al-Mahdī against him In this year ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, al-Manṣūr's governor of Khurāsān, renounced allegiance. The reason for that was that when al-Manṣūr appointed ʿAbd al-Jabbār over Khurāsān, he set about the commanders and killed some of them and imprisoned others. News of that reached al-Manṣūr, and a letter came to him from one of them: 'The hide has become tainted.' He said to Abū Ayyūb: 'ʿAbd al-Jabbār has destroyed our partisans, and he has only done that because he intends to renounce allegiance.' Abū Ayyūb said to him: 'Write to him that you intend to campaign against the Byzantines, and let him send to you the troops from Khurāsān with their horsemen and notables. When they have left it, send against him whom you will and you will not be prevented.' Al-Manṣūr wrote to him about that, and he replied: 'The Turks have stirred, and if I disperse the troops, Khurāsān will be lost.' He threw the letter to Abū Ayyūb and said to him: 'What do you think?' He said: 'He has given you his reins. Write to him: Khurāsān is more important to me than others, and I am sending troops to you. Then send troops to him so that they will be in Khurāsān; if he intends to renounce allegiance, they will seize him by the neck.' When the letter with this reached ʿAbd al-Jabbār, he replied: 'Khurāsān has never been in a worse state than it is in this year, and if the troops enter it they will perish because of the hardship of the famine they are in.' When his letter came, he threw it to Abū Ayyūb, and Abū Ayyūb said to him: 'He has shown his true face and has already renounced allegiance, so do not debate with him.' Al-Manṣūr sent his son al-Mahdī and commanded him to encamp at al-Rayy. Al-Mahdī marched there, and he sent Khāzim b. Khuzaymah ahead of him to fight ʿAbd al-Jabbār. Al-Mahdī proceeded and encamped at Naysābūr. When that reached the people of Marw al-Rūdh, they marched against ʿAbd al-Jabbār and fought him with fierce fighting. He was defeated by them and took refuge in a thicket and hid in it. Al-Mujashshar b. Muzāḥim, of the people of Marw al-Rūdh, crossed over to him and took him captive. When Khāzim arrived, he brought him to him, and he clothed him in a woolen jubbah, mounted him on a camel, placed his face toward the camel's hindquarters, and carried him to al-Manṣūr, along with his son and his companions. He spread torture over them until he extracted the wealth from them. Then he commanded, and the hands and feet of ʿAbd al-Jabbār were cut off and his neck was struck. He commanded that his son be sent to Dahlak, which is an island in Yemen. They remained there until the Indians raided them and took them captive among those they captured, and afterward they were ransomed. Among those who escaped them was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār. He accompanied the caliphs and died in the days of al-Rashīd in the year one hundred and seventy. It is said: The affair of ʿAbd al-Jabbār was in the year one hundred and forty-two in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, and it is said: in the year one hundred and forty.
