Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, the Imām We have already mentioned the reason for his imprisonment. People disagreed about his death. It was said: Marwān imprisoned him in Ḥarrān, and he also imprisoned Saʿīd b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik and his two sons ʿUthmān and Marwān, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and Abū Muḥammad al-Sufyānī. Among them, in a plague that occurred in Ḥarrān, al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd, Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, the Imām, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar perished. One week before Marwān's defeat at the Zāb, Saʿīd b. Hishām, his cousin, and those with them among the prisoners came out. They killed the jailer and escaped, but the people of Ḥarrān and the rabble who were there killed them. Among those killed by the people of Ḥarrān were Sharāḥīl b. Maslama b. ʿAbd al-Malik, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Bishr al-Taghlibī, and the patrician of the Fourth Armenia, whose name was Kūshān. Abū Muḥammad al-Sufyānī stayed behind in the prison and did not go out with those who went out. With him were others who did not consider it lawful to leave the prison. Then Marwān arrived defeated from the Zāb, came, and released them. It was also said: Marwān demolished a house on top of Ibrāhīm and killed him. It was also said: Sharāḥīl b. Maslama b. ʿAbd al-Malik was imprisoned with Ibrāhīm, and they used to visit each other, so a friendship developed between them. One day a messenger from Sharāḥīl came to Ibrāhīm with some milk and said: "Your brother says to you: I drank some of this milk and found it good, so I would like you to drink some of it." He drank it, and his body broke out immediately. He used to visit Sharāḥīl on a certain day. When he was late, Sharāḥīl sent to him: "You are late. What kept you?" Ibrāhīm replied: "When I drank the milk you sent, it gave me diarrhea." Sharāḥīl came to him and said: "By God, besides whom there is no god, I did not drink milk today, nor did I send any to you! To God we belong and to Him we return! By God, a trick was played on you." Ibrāhīm spent that night and died in the morning. Ibrāhīm b. Harma said elegizing him: I used to think myself tough, but a grave in Ḥarrān, in which lies the protection of the religion, has weakened me. In it is the Imām and the best of all people, between the slabs, the stones, and the clay. In it is the Imām whose calamity has encompassed everyone, and has impoverished every possessor of wealth and every poor person. May God not pardon Marwān for any injustice, but may God pardon the one who said "Amen." Ibrāhīm was good, virtuous, and generous. He once came to Madinah and distributed a great amount of money among its people. He sent 500 dinars to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan, and he sent 1,000 dinars to Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad. He sent a great deal of money to a group of the ʿAlawīs. Al-Ḥusayn b. Zayd b. ʿAlī came to him when he was a small boy, and he seated him on his lap. He said: "Who are you?" He said: "I am al-Ḥusayn b. Zayd b. ʿAlī." He wept until his cloak became wet, and he ordered his agent to bring what remained of the money. He brought 400 dinars and handed them over to him, saying: "If we had anything else, I would have given it to you." He sent some of his clients with him to his mother, Rayṭa bt. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyya, to apologize to her. (He was born in the year 82, and his mother was an umm walad, a Berber named Salmā.) It would have been appropriate to mention his killing before Marwān's defeat, but we put that first so that the events would follow one another.
