✧ Mention of the defeat of Marwān at the Zāb We have mentioned that Qaḥṭabah sent Abū ʿAwn ʿAbd al-Malik b. Yazīd al-Azdī to Shahrazūr, and that he killed ʿUthmān b. Sufyān and remained in the region of al-Mawṣil, and that Marwān b. Muḥammad marched against him from Ḥarrān until he reached the Zāb, and he dug a trench. He was in twenty and a hundred thousand [i.e., 120,000], and Abū ʿAwn marched to the Zāb. Abū Salamah sent to Abū ʿAwn ʿUyaynah b. Mūsā, al-Minhāl b. Fattān, and Isḥāq b. Ṭalḥah, each one in three thousand. When Abū al-ʿAbbās appeared, he sent Salamah b. Muḥammad in two thousand, ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṭāʾī in one thousand five hundred, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Ribʿī al-Ṭāʾī in two thousand, and Widās b. Naḍlah in five hundred to Abū ʿAwn. Then he said: "Who will march to Marwān from my family?" ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī said: "I will." So he sent him to Abū ʿAwn, and he arrived to him. Abū ʿAwn moved from his pavilion and vacated it for him and what was in it. When two nights had passed of Jumādā al-Ākhirah in the year 132, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī asked about a ford and was directed to it at the Zāb. He ordered ʿUyaynah b. Mūsā, so he crossed in five thousand and reached Marwān's camp. He fought them until evening, then returned to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī. Marwān rose in the morning, laid a bridge, and crossed over it. His ministers forbade him from that, but he did not accept. He sent his son ʿAbd Allāh, who encamped below the camp of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī sent al-Mukhāriq in four thousand toward ʿAbd Allāh b. Marwān. Ibn Marwān sent against him al-Walīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam. They met, and al-Mukhāriq's companions were defeated, while he himself stood firm. He and a group were taken prisoner, and they were sent to Marwān together with the heads of the slain. Marwān said: "Bring in to me a man from the prisoners." They brought him al-Mukhāriq, and he was thin. He said: "Are you al-Mukhāriq?" He said: "No, I am a slave from the slaves of the people of the camp." He said: "Do you know al-Mukhāriq?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then look whether you see him among these heads." He looked at one of the heads and said: "It is this one." So he let him go. A man with Marwān said when he looked at al-Mukhāriq, not knowing him: "May God curse Abū Muslim when he brought us these people to fight against us with them." It was said: When al-Mukhāriq looked at the heads, he said: "I do not see his head among them, and I do not think he is other than gone." So he let him go. When the defeat reached ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī, he sent to the route of the defeated ones someone to prevent them from entering the camp, lest their people take alarm. Abū ʿAwn advised him to hasten battle with Marwān before the matter of al-Mukhāriq became known, and that would break the people's resolve. So he called among them to put on weapons and go out to war. They mounted, and he appointed Muḥammad b. Ṣūl over his camp, and he marched toward Marwān. He placed Abū ʿAwn on his right wing and al-Walīd b. Muʿāwiyah on his left wing. His camp was twenty thousand, and it was said: twelve thousand, and other than that was said. When the two camps met, Marwān said to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz: "If the sun declines today and they have not fought us, we would be the ones who hand it over to the Messiah ﷺ, and if they fight us before the declining, then we are to God and to Him we return." Marwān sent to ʿAbd Allāh asking him for truce. ʿAbd Allāh said: "The son of Zurayq has lied. The sun will not decline until I trample him under cavalry, if God wills." Marwān said to the people of Syria: "Stand; we will not begin fighting them." He kept looking at the sun. Al-Walīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam charged, and he was the son-in-law of Marwān b. Muḥammad, married to his daughter. He became angry and reviled him. Ibn Muʿāwiyah fought Abū ʿAwn, and Abū ʿAwn withdrew to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī. He said to Mūsā b. Kaʿb: "O ʿAbd Allāh, order the people to dismount." So it was called: "To the ground!" The people dismounted, leveled their spears, and knelt on their knees and fought them. The people of Syria began to fall back as if they were being driven. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī advanced on foot, saying: "O Lord, how long shall we be killed for Your sake?" He called: "O people of Khurāsān! O vengeance for Ibrāhīm! O Muḥammad! O Manṣūr!" The fighting intensified between them. Marwān said to Quḍāʿah: "Dismount." They said: "Tell Banū Sulaym to dismount." He sent to al-Sakāsik: "Charge." They said: "Tell Banū ʿĀmir to charge." He sent to al-Sakūn: "Charge." They said: "Tell Ghaṭafān to charge." He said to the commander of his guard: "Dismount." He said: "By God, I will not make myself a target." He said: "By God, I will harm you!" He said: "I wish by God that you were able to do that." On that day Marwān did not manage anything without there being a flaw in it. He ordered the wealth to be brought out and said to the people: "Be patient and fight, for this wealth is yours." Some of the people began to take from that. It was said to him: "The people have inclined to this wealth, and we do not trust them not to go away with it." So he sent to his son ʿAbd Allāh: "March with your companions to the rear of your camp, kill whoever has taken from the wealth, and prevent them." ʿAbd Allāh moved with his banner and his companions, so the people said: "The defeat! The defeat!" Marwān was defeated and they were defeated, and the bridge was cut. Those who drowned that day were more than those who were killed. Among those who drowned that day was Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, the son of the deposed one. They retrieved him among the drowned, and ʿAbd Allāh recited: "And when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you looked on" [Q 2:50]. It was said: Rather, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī killed him in Syria. In this battle Saʿīd b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik was killed. It was said: Rather, ʿAbd Allāh killed him in Syria. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī remained in his camp for seven days. A man from the descendants of Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ said, reproaching Marwān: Flight clung to Marwān, so I said to him: The oppressor has returned an ostrich; his concern is escape. Where is flight and leaving kingship when ease has gone from you? Neither religion nor lineage remains. A butterfly of forbearance, a Pharaoh of punishment, And if you seek his generosity, a dog is before him, rabid. On that day ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī wrote to al-Saffāḥ with the victory, and he obtained Marwān's camp with all that was in it. He found many weapons and wealth, and he found no woman in it except a slave-girl who belonged to ʿAbd Allāh b. Marwān. When the letter came to al-Saffāḥ, he prayed two rakʿahs and ordered for those who witnessed the battle five hundred five hundred dinars, and he raised their stipends to eighty. Marwān's defeat at the Zāb was on Saturday, eleven nights having passed of Jumādā al-Ākhirah. Among those killed with him was Yaḥyā b. Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who was the brother of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the lord of al-Andalus. When he advanced to fight, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī saw a young man upon whom was the dignity of nobility, fighting seeking death. So he called to him: "O young man, you have safe-conduct, even if you were Marwān b. Muḥammad!" He said: "If I am not him, I am not less than him." He said: "Then you have safe-conduct, whoever you may be." He bowed his head, then said: The humiliation of life and the distress of death, Each I see as a bitter food. If there is nothing but one of the two, Then a march to death, a beautiful march. Then he fought until he was killed, and behold, he was Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik.
