✧ Mention of the revolt of Muḥammad b. Khālid in al-Kūfah, proclaiming the black banners In this year, Muḥammad b. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī revolted in al-Kūfah and proclaimed the black banners before al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah entered it. He expelled the governor of Ibn Hubayrah from it, then al-Ḥasan entered. His story is that Muḥammad revolted in al-Kūfah on the night of ʿĀshūrāʾ, proclaiming the black banners. Over al-Kūfah was Ziyād b. Ṣāliḥ al-Ḥārithī, and over his shurṭah was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Bashīr al-ʿIjlī. Muḥammad marched to the palace. Ziyād and those with him from the people of Syria departed, and Muḥammad entered the palace. Ḥawtharah heard the news and marched toward al-Kūfah. The majority of those with Muḥammad dispersed when the news reached them, and he remained with a small band of people from Syria and from the Yemenis who had fled from Marwān, and his mawālī were with him. Abū Salamah al-Khallāl sent to Muḥammad—he had not yet appeared—commanding him to leave the palace, fearing for him from Ḥawtharah and those with him. Neither of the two parties had yet learned of the death of Qaḥṭabah. Muḥammad refused to leave. Ḥawtharah learned of the dispersal of Muḥammad's companions from him and prepared to march toward him. While Muḥammad was in the palace, some of his scouts came to him and said: "Cavalry from the people of Syria has come." He sent a number of his mawālī toward them. The Syrians called out to them: "We are Bajīlah, and among us is Mulayḥ b. Khālid al-Bajalī. We have come to enter into obedience to the amīr." They entered. Then cavalry greater than that came, including Jahm b. al-Aṣfaḥ al-Kinānī. Then cavalry greater than it came with a man from the family of Baḥdal. When Ḥawtharah saw that from the conduct of his companions, he departed toward Wāsiṭ. Muḥammad b. Khālid wrote that night to Qaḥṭabah—not knowing of his death—informing him that he had taken al-Kūfah. The messenger arrived before al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah. When he handed him the letter of Muḥammad b. Khālid, he read it to the people, then departed toward al-Kūfah. Muḥammad remained in al-Kūfah on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and al-Ḥasan arrived on Monday morning. It is also said that al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah advanced toward al-Kūfah after the defeat of Ibn Hubayrah, while over it was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Bashīr al-ʿIjlī, and he fled from it. Muḥammad b. Khālid proclaimed the black banners and went out with eleven men, and the people pledged allegiance. Al-Ḥasan entered it the next day.
