Translation

✧ Then the year 132 AH began. Mention of the death of Qaḥṭabah and the defeat of Ibn Hubayrah. In this year Qaḥṭabah b. Shabīb ؓ died. The reason for that was that when Qaḥṭabah crossed the Euphrates and came to its west bank, that being in Muḥarram after eight days of it had passed, Ibn Hubayrah had encamped at the mouth of the Euphrates in the land of al-Fallūjah al-ʿUlyā, twenty-three farsakhs from al-Kūfah. The remnants of Ibn Ḍubārah had joined him, and Marwān reinforced him with Ḥawtharah al-Bāhilī. Ḥawtharah and others said to Ibn Hubayrah: "Qaḥṭabah has gone on intending al-Kūfah, so make for Khurāsān yourself and leave him and Marwān, for you will crush him, and it is more fitting that he follow you." He said: "He would not follow me and leave al-Kūfah. The right course is to hasten to al-Kūfah before him." So he crossed the Tigris from al-Madāʾin intending al-Kūfah, and placed Ḥawtharah over his vanguard and ordered him to march to al-Kūfah. The two parties were marching on opposite banks of the Euphrates. Qaḥṭabah said: "The Imam informed me that I will have a battle in this place in which victory will be ours." Qaḥṭabah encamped at al-Jibāriyah, and they had guided him to a ford, so he crossed from it and fought Ḥawtharah and Muḥammad b. Nabātah. The Syrians were defeated and lost sight of Qaḥṭabah. His companions said: "Whoever has a covenant from Qaḥṭabah, let him inform us of it." Muqātil b. Mālik al-ʿAtakī said: "I heard Qaḥṭabah say: If anything befalls me, my son al-Ḥasan is the commander of the people." So the people gave allegiance on behalf of Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭabah to his brother al-Ḥasan. His father had sent him on a raiding party, so they sent for him and brought him, and handed over the command to him. When they missed Qaḥṭabah, they searched for him and found him in a canal with Ḥarb b. Sālim b. Aḥwaz, both slain, so they thought that each of them had killed the other. It is also said: Maʿn b. Zāʾidah struck Qaḥṭabah when he crossed the Euphrates on the strap of his shoulder, so he fell into the water. They pulled him out, and he said: "Bind my hands when I die and cast me into the water so that people do not know of my death." The people of Khurāsān fought, and Muḥammad b. Nabātah and the Syrians were defeated. Qaḥṭabah died, and before his death he said: "When you reach al-Kūfah, the vizier of the family of Muḥammad is Abū Salamah al-Khallāl, so hand this matter over to him." It is also said: rather Qaḥṭabah drowned. When Ibn Nabātah and Ḥawtharah were defeated, they joined Ibn Hubayrah, and Ibn Hubayrah fled with their flight. They rejoined at Wāsiṭ and abandoned their camp and what it contained of wealth, weapons, and so forth. When al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah took over the command, he ordered an inventory of what was in the camp. It is also said: Ḥawtharah was in al-Kūfah, and news of Ibn Hubayrah's defeat reached him, so he marched to him with those who were with him.
