Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of ʿĀmir b. Ḍubārah and the entry of Qaḥṭabah into Iṣbahān The reason for his killing was that when ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar was defeated by Ibn Ḍubārah, he fled towards Khurāsān, taking the road to Kirmān, and ʿĀmir marched in his pursuit. The news of the killing of Nubātah b. Ḥanẓalah at Jurjān reached Ibn Hubayrah. When he learned of it, he wrote to Ibn Ḍubārah and to his son Dāwūd b. Yazīd b. ʿUmar b. Hubayrah, ordering them to march against Qaḥṭabah. They were in Kirmān, so they marched with fifty thousand and encamped at Iṣbahān. The army of Ibn Ḍubārah was called the Army of Armies. Qaḥṭabah sent against them a group of commanders, all under Muqātil b. Ḥakīm al-ʿAkkī, and they marched until they encamped at Qumm. Ibn Ḍubārah learned that al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah had encamped at Nihāwand, so he marched to reinforce those of Marwān’s companions who were there. Al-ʿAkkī sent word from Qumm to Qaḥṭabah informing him of that, so Qaḥṭabah advanced from al-Rayy until he joined Muqātil b. Ḥakīm al-ʿAkkī. Then they marched and met Ibn Ḍubārah and Dāwūd b. Yazīd b. Hubayrah. Qaḥṭabah’s army was twenty thousand, among them Khālid b. Barmak, while Ibn Ḍubārah’s army was one hundred thousand, or it is said one hundred and fifty thousand. Qaḥṭabah ordered that a muṣḥaf be raised on a lance, and he called out: “O people of Syria! We call you to what is in this muṣḥaf!” But they reviled him and used foul language against him. So Qaḥṭabah sent to his companions ordering them to charge. Al-ʿAkkī charged at them, and the people clashed. There was not much fighting between them before the Syrians were routed and killed in great slaughter. Ibn Ḍubārah fled until he entered his camp, and Qaḥṭabah followed him. Ibn Ḍubārah dismounted and called out: “To me, to me!” But the people fled from him, and Dāwūd b. Hubayrah fled. He asked about Ibn Ḍubārah and was told that he had fled. He said: “May God curse the worst of us in retreat!” and he fought until he was killed. They seized his camp and took from it incalculable amounts of weapons, goods, slaves, and horses. Never was a camp seen that contained such varieties of things as this camp; it was like a city. It contained countless lutes, ṭunbūrs, reed pipes, and wine. Qaḥṭabah sent word of the victory to his son al-Ḥasan, who was at Nihāwand. The battle took place in the environs of Iṣbahān in Rajab.
