Translation

✧ Mention of Qaḥṭabah's war against the people of Nahāwand and its entry When Ibn Ḍubārah was killed, Qaḥṭabah wrote about that to his son al-Ḥasan, who was besieging Nahāwand. When the letter reached him, he and his troops said Allāhu akbar and proclaimed his killing. ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmayr al-Saʿdī said: 'These people have not proclaimed his killing unless it is true! Go out to al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah, for you cannot withstand him, and go wherever you wish before his father or reinforcements from him come to him.' The infantry said: 'Will you go out while you are cavalrymen on horses and leave us?' Mālik b. Adham al-Bāhilī said to him: 'I will not leave until Qaḥṭabah comes upon me.' Qaḥṭabah stayed at Iṣbahān for twenty days, then marched and came to his son at Nahāwand. He besieged them for three months: Shaʿbān, Ramaḍān, and Shawwāl. He set mangonels against them and sent to those in Nahāwand from the people of Khurāsān, calling them to him and granting them amān, but they refused that. Then he sent to the people of Syria something similar. They answered him and accepted his amān. They sent to him asking that he engage the people of the city in fighting to divert them from the gate adjacent to them, so that they could open it for him. Qaḥṭabah did that and fought them. The people of Syria opened the gate and came out. When the people of Khurāsān saw that, they asked them about their coming out. They said: 'We took amān for ourselves and for you.' The leaders of the people of Khurāsān came out. Qaḥṭabah handed each man of them over to one of his commanders. Then he ordered it to be proclaimed: 'Whoever has a prisoner from those who came out to us, let him strike his neck and bring us his head!' They did that. No one who had fled from Abū Muslim remained except that he was killed, except the people of Syria, for he kept faith with them and let them go, taking from them a pledge that they would not assist any enemy against him, and he did not kill anyone of them. Among those killed from the people of Khurāsān were: Abū Kāmil, Ḥātim b. al-Ḥārith b. Surayj, the son of Naṣr b. Sayyār, ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmayr, ʿAlī b. ʿAqīl, and Bayhas. When Qaḥṭabah besieged Nahāwand, he sent his son al-Ḥasan to Marj al-Qalʿah. Al-Ḥasan sent forward Khāzim b. Khuzaymah to Ḥulwān, over which was ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAlāʾ al-Kindī. He fled from Ḥulwān and left it.
