✧ Mention of Abū Ḥamzah al-Khārijī and Ṭālib al-Ḥaqq And in this year, Abū Ḥamzah and Balj b. ʿUqbah al-Azdī al-Khārijī came from the pilgrimage on behalf of ʿAbd Allāh b. Yaḥyā al-Ḥaḍramī, Ṭālib al-Ḥaqq, as arbiters of opposition against Marwān b. Muḥammad. While the people were at ʿArafah, they were unaware until black banners and turbans appeared over the heads of spears, and they were seven hundred. The people were alarmed when they saw them and asked them about their situation, and they informed them of their opposition to Marwān and the family of Marwān. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who was then governor of Makkah and Madinah, corresponded with them and sought a truce from them. They said: "We are more concerned with our pilgrimage and more zealous for it." So he made peace with them on the condition that they would all be safe from one another until the people departed at the final departure. Thus they stood at ʿArafah separately. Then the people pushed on with ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, and he alighted at Minā in the sultan's camp, while Abū Ḥamzah alighted at Qarn al-Thaʿālib. So ʿAbd al-Wāḥid sent to Abū Ḥamzah al-Khārijī: ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr, ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Ḥafṣ b. ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, and Rabīʿah b. Abī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, along with men of their like. They entered upon Abū Ḥamzah, who was wearing a coarse cotton loincloth. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh advanced toward him and he asked them their lineage, and they gave it to him, and he frowned at their faces and showed aversion to them. Then he asked ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim and ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar, and they gave their lineages, and he was pleased with them and smiled in their faces and said: "By Allah, we did not come out to follow the conduct of your fathers." ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan said to him: "By Allah, we did not come so that you should prefer among our fathers, but the amīr sent us to you with a message, and this Rabīʿah will inform you of it." When Rabīʿah mentioned to him the breaking of the covenant, Abū Ḥamzah said: "Allah forbid that we should break the covenant or violate it. No, by Allah, I will not do it even if this neck of mine is cut off, but the truce between us and you will expire." So they returned to ʿAbd al-Wāḥid and conveyed it to him. When the first departure came, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid departed in it and left Makkah, and Abū Ḥamzah entered it without fighting. One of them said about ʿAbd al-Wāḥid: A band visited the pilgrims who had opposed the religion of God, so ʿAbd al-Wāḥid fled. He left behind the womenfolk and the command, fleeing, And went on stumbling like a stray camel. Then ʿAbd al-Wāḥid went on until he entered Madinah, and he imposed a military expedition on its people and increased their stipends by ten and ten, and he appointed over them ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān. So they went out, and when they were at al-Ḥarrah, slaughtered camels met them, and they proceeded.
