✧ Mention of ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah's conquest of Fārs and his killing In this year, ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar conquered Fārs and its regions. His appearance in al-Kūfah, his defeat, and his departure from al-Kūfah toward al-Madāʾin have already been mentioned. When he arrived there, people from the inhabitants of al-Kūfah and others came to him, and he marched to al-Jibāl and conquered it, along with Ḥulwān, Qūmis, Iṣbahān, and al-Rayy. The slaves of the people of al-Kūfah went out to him, and he stayed in Iṣbahān. Muḥārib b. Mūsā, a mawlā of Banū Yashkur, was a man of great standing in Fārs. He came to the governor's residence in Iṣṭakhr, expelled Ibn ʿUmar's governor from it, and the people pledged allegiance to ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah. Muḥārib went out to Kirmān and raided it. Commanders from the people of al-Shām joined Muḥārib, and he marched against Muslim b. al-Musayyab, who was Ibn ʿUmar's governor in Shīrāz, and killed him in the year twenty-eight. Then Muḥārib went out to Iṣbahān to ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah and brought him to Iṣṭakhr, where he stayed. The people, Banū Hāshim and others, came to him, and he collected the taxes and dispatched governors. With him were Manṣūr b. Jumhūr and Sulaymān b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz the Khārijite came to him, as previously mentioned. Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr came to him, as did ʿAbd Allāh and ʿĪsā, the two sons of ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās. When Ibn Hubayrah arrived in Iraq, he sent Nubātah b. Ḥanẓalah al-Kilābī against ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah. Sulaymān b. Ḥabīb learned that Ibn Hubayrah had appointed Nubātah over al-Ahwāz, so he dispatched Dāwūd b. Ḥātim, who took up position at Karkh Dīnār to prevent Nubātah from entering al-Ahwāz. Nubātah fought him, Dāwūd was killed, and Sulaymān fled from al-Ahwāz to Sābūr, where the Kurds had gained control. Sulaymān fought them and drove them from Sābūr, and he wrote to Ibn Muʿāwiyah pledging allegiance. Then Muḥārib b. Mūsā al-Yashkurī quarreled with Ibn Muʿāwiyah and separated from him. He gathered a force and came to Sābūr, where Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah, the brother of ʿAbd Allāh, fought him. Muḥārib was defeated and went to Kirmān, where he stayed until Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath arrived, and he joined him. Then he quarreled with him, and Ibn al-Ashʿath killed him along with twenty-four of his sons. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah remained in Iṣṭakhr until Ibn Ḍubārah came against him with Dāwūd b. Yazīd b. ʿUmar b. Hubayrah. Ibn Hubayrah also sent Maʿn b. Zāʾidah from another direction. Maʿn fought them at Marw Shādhān, while Maʿn recited: The leader of the people is not the deceitful deceiver; he fled from death and in death he fell. Ibn Muʿāwiyah was defeated, and Maʿn held back from them. In the battle a man from the family of Abū Lahab was killed, and it was said: a man from Banū Hāshim would be killed at Marw al-Shādhān. They took many prisoners, and Ibn Ḍubārah killed a great number of them. Manṣūr b. Jumhūr fled to al-Sind, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd to ʿUmān, and ʿAmr b. Sahl b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān to Miṣr. He sent the rest of the prisoners to Ibn Hubayrah, who released them. Ibn Muʿāwiyah went on to Khurāsān. Maʿn b. Zāʾidah went in pursuit of Manṣūr b. Jumhūr but did not catch him, so he returned. With Ibn Muʿāwiyah there were many Khawārij and others, and forty thousand of them were taken prisoner, including ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās. Ibn Ḍabārah reviled him and said to him: "What brought you to Ibn Muʿāwiyah when you knew of his opposition to the Commander of the Faithful?" He said: "I had a debt, so I paid it." Ḥarb b. Qaṭan al-Hilālī interceded for him, saying: "He is the son of our sister," so he gave him to him. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī then criticized ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah and accused his companions of sodomy. Ibn Ḍubārah sent him to Ibn Hubayrah to inform him of the news of Ibn Muʿāwiyah. He went in pursuit of ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah to Shīrāz and besieged him. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah fled from it with his brothers al-Ḥasan and Yazīd, the two sons of Muʿāwiyah, and a group of his companions. He took the desert road toward Kirmān and made for Khurāsān, hoping in Abū Muslim because he was calling for the satisfaction of the family of Muḥammad and had taken control of Khurāsān. He reached the districts of Harāt, whose governor was Abū Naṣr Mālik b. al-Haytham al-Khuzāʿī. He sent to Ibn Muʿāwiyah asking about his arrival, and he said: "I heard that you call for the satisfaction of the family of Muḥammad, so I came to you." Mālik sent to him: "Give your lineage so we may know you." He gave his lineage, and he said: "As for ʿAbd Allāh and Jaʿfar, they are among the names of the family of the Messenger of God ﷺ; but as for Muʿāwiyah, we do not know it among their names." He said: "My grandfather was with Muʿāwiyah when my father was born to him, and he asked him to name his son after him, so he did, and Muʿāwiyah sent him a hundred thousand dirhams." Mālik sent to him: "You have bought the wicked name for a paltry price, and we see no right for you in what you claim." Then he sent to Abū Muslim informing him of his news, and he ordered him to arrest him and those with him. So he arrested them and imprisoned them. Then a letter from Abū Muslim came to him ordering him to release al-Ḥasan and Yazīd, the two sons of Muʿāwiyah, and to kill ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiyah. So he ordered someone to place a mattress over his face, and he died. He was brought out, prayed over, and buried. His grave in Harāt is well known and visited, may God have mercy on him.
