✧ Mention of the governorship of Yūsuf b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Fihrī in al-Andalus In this year Thawābah b. Salāmah, the amīr of al-Andalus, died. His governorship had lasted two years and some months. When he died, the people disagreed: the Muḍariyyah wanted the amīr to be from among them, and the Yamāniyyah likewise wanted the amīr to be from among them. They remained without an amīr. Al-Ṣumayl feared discord and suggested that the governor should be from Quraysh. All of them agreed to that, and he chose for them Yūsuf b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Fihrī. At that time he was in Ilbīrah, so they wrote to him about what the people had agreed upon regarding his appointment. He refused, but they said to him: “If you do not do it, discord will occur and the sin of that will be upon you.” Then he accepted and traveled to Qurṭubah. He entered it and the people obeyed him. When the death of Thawābah and the appointment of Yūsuf reached Abū al-Khaṭṭār, he said: “Al-Ṣumayl only wanted the matter to pass to Muḍar,” and he worked among the people until discord erupted between Yaman and Muḍar. When Yūsuf saw that, he left the palace of the emirate in Qurṭubah and returned to his house. Abū al-Khaṭṭār marched to Shaqūndah, and the Yamāniyyah gathered to him, while the Muḍariyyah gathered as well. They advanced against each other and fought for many days, a fighting greater than which had never occurred in al-Andalus. Then the war resulted in the defeat of the Yamāniyyah. Abū al-Khaṭṭār fled defeated and hid in a mill belonging to al-Ṣumayl. He was pointed out, so al-Ṣumayl seized him and killed him. Yūsuf b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān returned to the palace, and al-Ṣumayl increased in honor. The name of the emirate belonged to Yūsuf, but the rule belonged to al-Ṣumayl. Then ʿAlqamah al-Lakhmī rebelled against Yūsuf b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in the city of Arbūnah. He did not remain but a short while before he was killed and his head carried to Yūsuf. ʿUdhrah, known as al-Dhimmī, rebelled against him. He was called that because he sought help from the people of the covenant. Yūsuf sent ʿĀmir b. ʿAmr against him—he is the one to whom the cemetery of ʿĀmir at one of the gates of Qurṭubah is attributed—but he did not overcome him and returned defeated. Then Yūsuf b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān himself marched against him, fought him, killed him, and plundered his camp. This incident has also been reported from another angle with some disagreement, and we shall mention it in the year one hundred and thirty-nine at the entry of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī into al-Andalus.
