✧ Bakr b. Sawādah b. Thumāmah al-Judhāmī: He narrated from Sahl b. Saʿd, Sufyān b. Wahb al-Khawlānī, and Abū Thawr al-Fahmī, all of whom were Companions. He also narrated from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib and Abū Salamah. He died in Ifrīqiyah in this year. Ḥuyayy b. Hāniʾ, Abū Qubayl al-Maʿāfirī: He came to Egypt during the days of Muʿāwiyah, and he raided Rhodes with Junādah b. Abī Umayyah, and the Maghrib with Ḥassān b. al-Nuʿmān. Al-Layth and Ibn Lahīʿah narrated from him. He was asked about qadar (divine decree), and he said: "I am older in Islam than it, and a religion for which I am older than it—there is no good in it." He would personally buy things from the market, and he used to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. He died at al-Rās in this year. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Zayd: He was a devoted worshipper who wept much. He would tell stories to his companions, and a group would die in the gathering. He prayed the dawn prayer with the ablution of the night prayer for forty years. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Qāsim informed us with his chain of transmission from Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī, who said: Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī said to me: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Zayd was afflicted with hemiplegia, so he asked Allah to release it at the time of ablution. When he wanted to perform ablution, it would be released, and when he returned to his bed, the hemiplegia would return. Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb—Ḥabīb's name was Suwayd, a client of Sharīk b. al-Ṭufayl al-ʿĀmirī, whose kunyah was Abū Rajāʾ: He was born in the year 53 AH, and he was Nubian. He used to say: "My father was a Nubian from the people of Damlaqah, and Sharīk b. al-Ṭufayl bought him and freed him, so our clientage belongs to him." He narrated from Abū al-Ṭufayl and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Jazʾ. Sulaymān al-Taymī narrated from him. Yazīd was the mufti of the people of Egypt in his time, and he was the first to make knowledge public in Egypt—discourse on the lawful and unlawful and questions of jurisprudence. Before that, they used to speak only about trials, battles, and encouragement to do good. He was one of the three to whom ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz entrusted giving legal opinions in Egypt. He was forbearing and wise. When the people's questions became too many for Yazīd, he stayed in his house. Al-Layth b. Saʿd used to say: "Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb was our master and our scholar." Yazīd b. al-Qaʿqāʿ, Abū Jaʿfar al-Makhzūmī al-Qārrī al-Madanī, a client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās: He heard from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās. Mālik b. Anas narrated from him. He was the imam of the people of Madinah in Qurʾān recitation, and he was pious and virtuous. He died during the days of Marwān b. Muḥammad b. Marwān. In this year Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah b. al-Mughīrah b. al-Akhnas al-Thaqafī al-Madanī died. In this year Jābir b. Yazīd al-Juʿfī died. He was one of the extremist Shīʿah and believed in rajʿah (return). In this year Muḥammad b. Muslim b. Tadrus, Abū al-Zubayr al-Makkī, died, as did Jāmiʿ b. Shaddād, and Abū Qubayl al-Maʿāfirī—whose name was Ḥuyayy b. Hāniʾ al-Muḍarī. (Qubayl: with a fatḥah on the qāf and a kasrah on the unpointed bāʾ.) And Saʿīd b. Masrūq al-Thawrī, the father of Sufyān, died; he was trustworthy in ḥadīth. Jahm b. Ṣafwān, Abū Miḥriz, to whom the Jahmiyyah are attributed: He was in the army of al-Ḥārith b. Shurayḥ al-Khārijī, preaching and admonishing. Naṣr b. Sayyār fought them, and he was captured in the battle and killed. When Jahm was captured and brought before Salm b. Aḥwaz, he ordered his execution. He said: "I have a guarantee of safety from your son." He replied: "He had no right to grant you safety, and even if he did, I would not grant you safety. Even if you filled this cloak with stars, and brought down to me ʿĪsā son of Maryam, you would not escape. By Allah, if you were in my belly, I would split my belly open until I killed you." He ordered ʿAbd Rabbihi b. Sīsan, and he killed him.
