Then the Year 129 AH Began

Translation

✧ Then the year 129 AH began. Mention of Shaybān al-Ḥarūrī until he was killed. He is Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Abū al-Dulaf al-Yashkurī. The cause of his destruction was that when the Khawārij pledged allegiance to him after the killing of al-Khaybarī, he set about fighting Marwān. Many of those motivated by greed dispersed from Shaybān, so he remained with about forty thousand men. Sulaymān b. Hishām advised them to turn to al-Mawṣil and make it their rear. So they departed, and Marwān followed them until they reached al-Mawṣil. They encamped east of the Tigris and built bridges across it from their camp to the city, so that their provisions and needs came from it. Marwān dug a trench facing them. The Khawārij had encamped at al-Kār, and Marwān at Khuṣṣa. The people of al-Mawṣil fought alongside the Khawārij. Marwān remained fighting them for six months, and it is said nine months. A nephew of Sulaymān b. Hishām named Umayya b. Muʿāwiya b. Hishām, who was with his uncle Sulaymān in Shaybān's camp, was brought to Marwān as a captive. He cut off his hands and struck his neck while his uncle looked on. Marwān wrote to Yazīd b. ʿUmar b. Hubayra ordering him to march from Qarqīsiyā with all those with him to Iraq. Over al-Kūfa was al-Muthannā b. ʿImrān al-ʿĀʾidhī, of ʿĀʾidhat Quraysh, who was the Khawārij's deputy in Iraq. He met Ibn Hubayra at ʿAyn al-Tamr, and they fought a fierce battle, and the Khawārij withdrew. Then they gathered at al-Kūfa at al-Nukhayla, and Ibn Hubayra defeated them. Then they gathered at al-Baṣra, and Shaybān sent to them ʿUbayda b. Sawwār with a great cavalry force. They met at al-Baṣra, and the Khawārij were routed, and ʿUbayda was killed. Ibn Hubayra plundered their camp, so they had no further concern with Iraq, and Ibn Hubayra took control of Iraq. Manṣūr b. Jumhūr was with the Khawārij and was defeated, then he took control of al-Māhayn and the entire mountain region. Ibn Hubayra marched to Wāsiṭ, seized Ibn ʿUmar, and imprisoned him. He dispatched Nabāta b. Ḥanẓala against Sulaymān b. Ḥabīb, who was over the districts of al-Ahwāz. Sulaymān heard the news and sent Dāwūd b. Ḥātim against Nabāta. They met at al-Marratān on the bank of Dujayl, and the people were routed, and Dāwūd b. Ḥātim was killed. When he took control of Iraq, Marwān wrote to Ibn Hubayra ordering him to send ʿĀmir b. Ḍubāra al-Murrī to him. He dispatched him with seven thousand or eight thousand men. News of him reached Shaybān, so he sent al-Jawn b. Kilāb al-Khārijī with a force. They met ʿĀmir at al-Sinn, and they routed him and those with him. He entered al-Sinn and fortified himself there. Marwān kept sending him reinforcements along the land route until they reached al-Sinn, so ʿĀmir's force grew large. Manṣūr b. Jumhūr used to supply Shaybān from the mountain with money. When those with ʿĀmir became numerous, he advanced against al-Jawn and the Khawārij and fought them and routed them. Al-Jawn was killed, and Ibn Ḍubāra marched up toward al-Mawṣil. When news of al-Jawn's killing and ʿĀmir's march toward him reached Shaybān, he disliked staying between the two armies, so he departed with those Khawārij who were with him. ʿĀmir arrived at Marwān's camp at al-Mawṣil, and Marwān sent him with a large force in pursuit of Shaybān: if he stayed, he was to stay; if he marched, he was to march; and he was not to initiate fighting against him. If Shaybān fought him, he was to fight him; if he refrained, he was to refrain from him; and if he departed, he was to follow him. He continued thus until he passed the mountain and emerged at Bayḍāʾ Fārs, where ʿAbd Allāh b. Muʿāwiya b. Ḥabīb b. Jaʿfar was with large forces, but no confrontation occurred between them. He marched on until he encamped at Jīruft in Kirmān. Ibn Muʿāwiya was defeated and fled to Harāt. Ibn Ḍubāra marched with those with him and met Shaybān at Jīruft. They fought a fierce battle, and the Khawārij were routed and their camp was plundered. Shaybān went on to Sijistān and perished there, in the year 130 AH. It is said: rather the fighting between Marwān and Shaybān at al-Mawṣil lasted about a month, then Shaybān was routed and fled until he reached Fārs, with ʿĀmir b. Ḍubāra pursuing him. Shaybān went to the island of Ibn Kāwān, then left it for ʿUmān, where Julandā b. Masʿūd b. Jayfar b. Julandā al-Azdī killed him in the year 134 AH (and we shall mention him there, God willing). Sulaymān and those with him of his family and clients boarded ships for al-Sind. When al-Saffāḥ assumed the caliphate, Sulaymān came to him, and he honored him and gave him his hand, and he kissed it. When Sudayf, al-Saffāḥ's client, saw that, he approached and said: Let not what you see of men deceive you; beneath the ribs lies a festering disease. Put the sword in place and raise the whip until you see no Umayyad above its back. Sulaymān turned to him and said: "You have killed me, old man!" Al-Saffāḥ rose and entered, and Sulaymān was seized and killed. After Shaybān's departure from al-Mawṣil, Marwān returned to his residence at Ḥarrān and stayed there until he marched to the Zāb.
