Translation

✧ The Caliphate of Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik [126 AH] Abū Isḥāq, he was given the oath of allegiance to the caliphate after the death of his brother Yazīd the Deficient. It was said: that he had covenanted to him, and it was said: no. Burd b. Sinān said: I attended Yazīd b. al-Walīd when he was at the point of death. Quṭn came to him and said: I am the messenger of those behind your door. They ask you by the right of God that you entrust their affair to your brother Ibrāhīm. He became angry and said: Am I to entrust Ibrāhīm?! Then he said: O Abū al-ʿAlāʾ; to whom do you think I should covenant? I said: A matter I forbade you from entering into, so I will not advise you regarding its end. He said: And he fell unconscious until I thought he had died. Quṭn sat down and fabricated a document of covenant on the tongue of Yazīd, and he called people and made them witnesses to it. No, by God, Yazīd did not covenant anything. Ibrāhīm remained in the caliphate for seventy nights, then he was deposed. Marwān b. Muḥammad rose against him and was given the oath of allegiance. Ibrāhīm fled, then came and abdicated himself from the affair, surrendered it to Marwān, and gave allegiance willingly. Ibrāhīm lived after that until the year thirty-two, and he was killed among those of the Banū Umayyah who were killed in the massacre of al-Saffāḥ. In the History of Ibn ʿAsākir: Ibrāhīm heard from al-Zuhrī, and he narrated from his paternal uncle Hishām. Narrated from him: his son Yaʿqūb. His mother was an umm walad, and he was the brother of Marwān al-Ḥimār through his mother. His deposition was on Monday, fourteen nights having passed of Ṣafar, in the year one hundred and twenty-seven. Al-Madāʾinī said: The affair was not completed for Ibrāhīm. Some people greeted him with the caliphate, some people greeted him with the emirate, and some people refused to give him allegiance. One of their poets said: We give allegiance to Ibrāhīm every Friday; indeed, an affair of which you are the guardian is lost. Another said: The inscription of his seal was: Ibrāhīm trusts in God. When Yazīd b. al-Walīd died, his brother Ibrāhīm took up the affair after him, but the affair was not completed for him. He was greeted sometimes with the caliphate, sometimes with the emirate, and sometimes he was not greeted with either of them. He remained for four months, and it was said: seventy days. Then Marwān b. Muḥammad marched against him and deposed him, as we shall mention. Then he remained alive until he was killed in the year one hundred and thirty-two. His kunyah was Abū Isḥāq, and his mother was an umm walad. Marwān b. Muḥammad killed ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, to whom Yazīd had contracted the oath of allegiance after Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd.
