Translation

✧ Mention of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥabīb’s seizure of Ifrīqiyah ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī ʿUbaydah b. ʿUqbah b. Nāfiʿ had fled when his father and Kulthūm b. ʿIyāḍ were killed in the year 122 AH, and he went to al-Andalus, as we have mentioned. He wanted to gain control over it, but he could not do that. When Ḥanẓalah b. Ṣafwān became governor of Ifrīqiyah, as we have mentioned, he sent Abū al-Khaṭṭār to al-Andalus as amir. Then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān despaired of what he had hoped for, so he returned to Ifrīqiyah while fearing Abū al-Khaṭṭār. He went out at Tunis in Ifrīqiyah in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 126 AH. Al-Walīd b. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik had become caliph in Syria, and he called the people to himself, and they answered him. He marched with them to al-Qayrawān. Those who were in it wanted to fight him, but Ḥanẓalah prevented them; he did not consider fighting except against an infidel or a Kharijite. Ḥanẓalah sent him a message with a group of the notables of al-Qayrawān, the chiefs of the tribes, calling him to return to obedience. He seized him and took them with him to al-Qayrawān and said: "If one of the people of al-Qayrawān throws a stone, I will kill all those who are with me." So no one fought him. Ḥanẓalah went out to Syria. When Ḥanẓalah went out to Syria, he prayed against the people of Ifrīqiyah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and his prayer was answered against them. Epidemic and plague fell upon them for seven years, not leaving them except at scattered times.
