Then the Year 125 AH Began
Translation
✧ In this year Yūsuf b. Muḥammad appointed Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī as judge of Madinah. In it al-Walīd b. Yazīd sent an army to the people of Cyprus with his brother, and said: “Give them the choice; whoever wishes to move to Syria, and whoever wishes to move to Byzantine territory.” So among them were those who chose the protection of the Muslims in Syria, and among them were those who moved to Byzantine territory. In it the Byzantines marched against Zibaṭra, an ancient fortress that Ḥabīb b. Maslama al-Fihrī had conquered; the Byzantines now destroyed it, and he built a construction that was not solid, so the Byzantines returned and destroyed it in the days of Marwān b. Muḥammad al-Ḥimār. Then al-Rashīd built it and filled it with men. When the caliphate of al-Maʾmūn came, the Byzantines attacked it by night and damaged it, so al-Maʾmūn ordered its repair and fortification. Then the Byzantines intended it in the days of al-Muʿtaṣim, as we shall mention, if God Almighty wills. I have only related its account here because I do not know the dates of its events. In it al-Walīd sent his brother al-Ghamr b. Yazīd on a raid, and appointed al-Aswad b. Bilāl al-Muḥāribī over the sea forces and dispatched him to Cyprus to give its people the choice between going to Syria or to Byzantine territory. A group chose the protection of the Muslims, so he sent them to Syria; others chose the Byzantines, so he sent them to them. In it Yaḥyā b. Yazīd b. ʿAlī was killed in Khurasan. In it Yūsuf b. Muḥammad al-Thaqafī, governor of Makkah, Madinah, and al-Ṭāʾif, led the people in the pilgrimage, while the governor of Iraq was Yūsuf b. ʿUmar, and the governor of Khurasan was Naṣr b. Sayyār, who was intent on coming to al-Walīd b. Yazīd, Commander of the Faithful, with the gifts and rarities he had, but al-Walīd was killed before he could meet him.
