Then the Year 125 AH Began
قِيلَ: إِنَّ الْجَعْدَ بْنَ دِرْهَمٍ أَظْهَرَ مَقَالَتَهُ بِخَلْقِ الْقُرْآنِ أَيَّامَ هِشَامِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، فَأَخَذَهُ هِشَامٌ وَأَرْسَلَهُ إِلَى خَالِدٍ الْقَسْرِيِّ، وَهُوَ أَمِيرُ الْعِرَاقِ، وَأَمَرَ بِقَتْلِهِ، فَحَبَسَهُ خَالِدٌ وَلَمْ يَقْتُلْهُ، فَبَلَغَ الْخَبَرُ هِشَامًا، فَكَتَبَ إِلَى خَالِدٍ يَلُومُهُ وَيَعْزِمُ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَقْتُلَهُ، فَأَخْرَجَهُ خَالِدٌ مِنَ الْحَبْسِ فِي وَثَاقِهِ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى الْعِيدَ يَوْمَ الْأَضْحَى قَالَ فِي آخِرِ خُطْبَتِهِ: انْصَرِفُوا وَضَحُّوا يَقْبَلِ اللَّهُ مِنْكُمْ، فَإِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَنْ أُضَحِّيَ الْيَوْمَ بِالْجَعْدِ بْنِ دِرْهَمٍ، فَإِنَّهُ يَقُولُ: مَا كَلَّمَ اللَّهُ مُوسَى، وَلَا اتَّخَذَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ خَلِيلًا، تَعَالَى اللَّهِ عَمَّا يَقُولُ الْجَعْدُ عُلُوًّا كَبِيرًا. ثُمَّ نَزَلَ وَذَبَحَهُ.
Translation
✧ It was said: Al-Jaʿd b. Dirham proclaimed his doctrine of the createdness of the Qurʾan in the days of Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik. So Hishām seized him and sent him to Khālid al-Qasrī, who was governor of Iraq, and ordered his execution. Khālid imprisoned him but did not kill him. The news reached Hishām, who wrote to Khālid blaming him and adjuring him to kill him. Khālid brought him out of prison in his fetters. When he had performed the ʿĪd prayer on the Day of Sacrifice, he said at the end of his sermon: 'Depart and offer your sacrifices, may Allah accept from you. For I intend to sacrifice today al-Jaʿd b. Dirham, for he says: Allah did not speak to Moses, nor did He take Abraham as an intimate friend. Exalted is Allah above what al-Jaʿd says, in great sublimity.' Then he came down and slaughtered him.
