Translation

✧ Ibn Jarīr said: In this year Sulaymān b. Kathīr, Mālik b. al-Haytham, Lāhiz b. Qurayẓ, and Qaḥṭabah b. Shabīb came to Makkah and met—according to the statement of the historians of the sīrah—Muḥammad b. ʿAlī. They informed him of the affair of Abū Muslim. He said: Is he free or a slave? They said: As for him, he claims that he is free, but as for his master, he claims that he is a slave. So they bought him and manumitted him, and they handed over to Muḥammad b. ʿAlī two hundred thousand dirhams and clothing worth thirty thousand. He said to them: Perhaps you will not meet me after this year of yours. If I die, then your leader is Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad—meaning his son—for he is my son, and I enjoin you to him. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī died at the beginning of Dhū al-Qaʿdah in this year, seven years after his father ʿAlī.
