Translation
✧ The Caliphate of al-Walīd b. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik the dissolute, may God disfigure him and distance him. Al-Wāqidī and al-Madāʾinī said: He was given the oath of allegiance for the caliphate on the day his paternal uncle Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik died, on Wednesday, six nights having passed of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, in the year one hundred and twenty-five. Al-Wāqidī said: Al-Walīd assumed authority, and he was called Abū al-ʿAbbās. His mother was called Umm al-Ḥajjāj bt. Muḥammad b. Yūsuf b. al-Ḥakam, the brother of al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf. He was white with a ruddy complexion, wide-eyed, handsome, had already gone gray, with long toes. An iron peg with a cord would be fixed for him, and he would tie the cord to his leg, then leap onto the mount and pull out the peg and ride, without touching the mount with his hand. He was learned in lexicography and poetry. The reason for his pledge of allegiance despite his immorality and profligacy was that his father Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik had designated the matter after him to his brother Hishām, then after him to this son of his, al-Walīd. When Hishām assumed authority, he honored his nephew al-Walīd until the matter of wine drinking, evil companions, and assemblies of diversion became apparent in him. Hishām wanted to cut that off from him, so he appointed him over the pilgrimage in the year one hundred and sixteen. He took hunting dogs with him secretly from his uncle; it is said that he put them in boxes, and a box containing a dog fell from them, and its sound was heard. They attributed that to the camel driver, and he was beaten for it. He was learned in lexicography and poetry. Among his poetry is his saying: My poetry about Sulaymā has spread and appeared, And every nomad and settled person has narrated it. The maidens have passed it among themselves, And they sang it until it became famous. I said words about Sulaymā, admiring, Like what Jamīl and ʿUmar said. If we saw any trace of Sulaymā, We would prostrate a thousand thousand times to the trace. We would take her as an approved imam, And she would be our pilgrimage and our ʿumrah. Sulaymā, the daughter of Saʿīd, is but a moon; Have we gone astray if we prostrate to the moon? This Salmā was the daughter of Saʿīd b. Khālid b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, and she was the sister of his wife. There was no equal to her beauty, and he loved her and divorced her sister until he married her during the caliphate. He also said about her: Kinship and affection were joined Between al-Walīd and the daughter of Saʿīd. Salmā is my passion, and I mention none other Than the newly acquired and none of the ancient. Among his poetry is: I am al-Walīd Abū al-ʿAbbās; the high ones of Maʿadd have known The extent of my attack and my boldness. I am indeed in the highest summit when they trace lineage, Facing between my maternal uncles and paternal uncles. I have descended from the essence of the noblest, they have known, In a lofty, towering, abundant glory.
