Translation
✧ A great estrangement occurred between Hishām and al-Walīd b. Yazīd because of al-Walīd's engaging in the indecencies and abominations he used to engage in. Hishām became hostile toward him and resolved to depose him and appoint his own son Maslama as heir apparent. Al-Walīd fled from him to the desert, and they exchanged the vilest correspondence, Hishām threatening him with severe threats and menacing him. Matters remained thus until Hishām died, with al-Walīd in the wilderness. On the night in whose morning the messengers would reach him with the caliphate, al-Walīd was greatly agitated, and said to one of his companions: 'Woe to you! A great agitation has seized me tonight. Mount, perhaps we may find some diversion.' So they rode two miles, talking about Hishām and his letters to him with menaces and threats. Then they saw from afar a dust cloud, voices, and a haze. It revealed messengers making for him with the authority. He said to his companion: 'Woe to you! These are Hishām's messengers. O God, grant us its good.' When the messengers drew near him and recognized him, they dismounted to the ground, came forward, and greeted him as caliph. He was dumbfounded and said: 'Woe to you! Has Hishām died?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Who sent you?' They said: 'Sālim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the head of the chancery.' They gave him the letter, and he read it. Then he asked them about the people's circumstances and how his uncle Hishām had died, and they told him. When al-Walīd saw Hishām's neglect of his rights, he went out with some of his close associates and clients, and encamped at al-Azraq in the territory of Balqayn and Fazāra, at a watering place called al-Aghdaq. He left behind his secretary ʿIyāḍ b. Muslim and told him: 'Write to me of whatever occurs in your vicinity.' Hishām cut off the allowances that had been paid to al-Walīd, and had ʿIyāḍ beaten severely. Al-Walīd remained in that wilderness until Hishām died and the caliphate reached him. He asked about his secretary ʿIyāḍ, and was told: 'O Commander of the Faithful, he remained imprisoned until God's decree befell Hishām. When Hishām reached a state in which life could no longer be hoped for him, ʿIyāḍ sent to the treasurers: "Keep careful guard over what is in your hands, and let no one take anything from it." Hishām regained consciousness for a moment and asked for something, but they refused him. He said: "It seems we were treasurers for al-Walīd." Then he died on the spot.' So ʿIyāḍ came out of prison, sealed the doors of the treasuries, and gave orders concerning Hishām, and he was removed from his bed. They could not find a flask in which to heat water for him until they borrowed one, nor could they find a shroud from the treasuries, and Ghālib, a client of Hishām, shrouded him.
