Translation
✧ The Daʿwah (Callers) of the Banū al-ʿAbbās It is said: The first of the callers of the Banū al-ʿAbbās to arrive in Khurāsān was Ziyād Abū Muḥammad, a client of Hamdān, during the governorship of Asad. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās sent him and said to him: "Settle among the Yemenis and be kind to Muḍar." And he forbade him from (contacting) a man from Nīsābūr called Ghālib, because he was extreme in his love for the Banū Fāṭimah. It is also said: The first to come to Khurāsān with the letter of Muḥammad b. ʿAlī was Ḥarb b. ʿUthmān, a client of the Banū Qays b. Thaʿlabah, from the people of Balkh. When Ziyād arrived, he called to the Banū al-ʿAbbās, mentioned the conduct of the Banū Umayyah and their oppression, and fed the people food. Ghālib came to him, and they debated the superiority of the family of ʿAlī and the family of al-ʿAbbās, then parted. Ziyād stayed in Marw for a winter, and Yahyā b. ʿUqayl al-Khuzāʿī and others from its people used to come to him. Asad was informed of him, so he summoned him and said to him: "What is this that has reached me about you?" He replied: "It is false. I only came for trade, and I have distributed my wealth among the people. When it is collected, I will leave." Asad said to him: "Leave my land." So he departed, but then returned to his activity. His matter was reported to Asad, who was warned of his danger, so he brought him and executed him, and executed ten men from the people of al-Kūfah with him. None of them escaped except two young boys whom he deemed too young. It is also said: Rather, he ordered that Ziyād be struck with the sword in the middle, so they struck him with the sword and it had no effect on him. The people shouted "Allāhu akbar." Asad said: "What is this?" It was said: "The sword recoiled from him." Then he was struck again and the sword recoiled from him. Then he struck him a third time and cut him in two. He offered acquittal to his companions: whoever disavowed him, he let go. Two disavowed and were released; eight refused the acquittal and were killed. The next day, one of the two came to Asad and said: "I ask you to join me to my companions." So he killed him. That was four days before al-Aḍḥā. Then after them a man from the people of al-Kūfah called Kathīr arrived. He stayed with Abū al-Najm. Those who had met Ziyād used to come to him. He remained thus for a year or two. He was illiterate. Then Khidāsh came to him—his name was ʿUmārah, but Khidāsh prevailed (as his name)—and he prevailed over Kathīr in his affair.
