The Year 109

وفي سَنَةُ تِسْعٍ وَمِائَةٍ كانت غَزْوَةُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ فِي الْبَحْرِ.  وَغَزْوَةُ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ هِشَامٍ أَرْضَ الرُّومِ فَفَتَحَ حِصْنًا بِهَا. وأُصِيبَ مَعَهُ قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ أَنْطَاكِيَّةَ. وَفِيهَا غَزَا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ التُّرْكَ مِنْ نَاحِيَةِ أَذْرَبِيجَانَ  ، فَغَنِمَ وَسَبَى وَعَادَ سَالِمًا. وَفِيهَا غَزَا بِشْرُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ عَامِلُ إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ جَزِيرَةَ صِقِلِّيَةَ، فَغَنِمَ شَيْئًا كَثِيرًا ثُمَّ رَجَعَ مِنْ غَزَاتِهِ إِلَى الْقَيْرَوَانِ وَتُوُفِّيَ بِهَا مِنْ سَنَتِهَا، ( فَاسْتَعْمَلَ هِشَامٌ بَعْدَهُ عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَغَرِّ السُّلَمِيَّ، فَعَزَلَ عُبَيْدَةُ يَحْيَى بْنَ سَلَمَةَ الْكَلْبِيَّ عَنِ الْأَنْدَلُسِ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنَ الْأَحْوَصِ الْأَشْجَعِيَّ، فَقَدِمَ الْأَنْدَلُسَ فِي رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ سَنَةَ عَشْرٍ وَمِائَةٍ، فَبَقِيَ وَالِيًا عَلَيْهَا سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ ثُمَّ عُزِلَ، وَوَلِيَهَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي نِسْعَةَ الْخَثْعَمِيُّ.

Translation

✧ In the year one hundred and nine: There was the naval expedition of ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUqbah. And the expedition of Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām into the land of the Byzantines, and he conquered a fortress there. Some people from Antioch were struck down along with him. In it, Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided the Turks from the direction of Adharbayjān, and he took spoils and captives and returned safely. In it, Bishr b. Ṣafwān, the governor of Ifrīqiyah, raided the island of Sicily, and he took much booty, then returned from his expedition to al-Qayrawān and died there in that same year. After him, Hishām appointed ʿUbaydah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Agharr al-Sulamī. ʿUbaydah dismissed Yaḥyā b. Salamah al-Kalbī from al-Andalus and appointed Ḥudhayfah b. al-Aḥwaṣ al-Ashjaʿī. He arrived in al-Andalus in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year one hundred and ten, and he remained its governor for six months, then he was dismissed, and ʿUthmān b. Abī Nisʿah al-Khathʿamī governed it.
