وَفِي سنة تسع ومائة قُتِلَ عُمَرُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْأُسَيَّدِيُّ ، قَتَلَهُ مَالِكُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الْجَارُودِ، وَسَبَبُ قَتْلِهِ أَنَّهُ أَبْلَى فِي قِتَالِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْمُهَلَّبِ، فَقَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ: هَذَا رَجُلُ الْعِرَاقِ. فَغَاظَ ذَلِكَ خَالِدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، وَأَمَرَ مَالِكَ بْنَ الْمُنْذِرَ، وَهُوَ عَلَى شُرَطِ الْبَصْرَةِ، أَنْ يُعَظِّمَهُ وَلَا يَعْصِيَ لَهُ أَمْرًا، وَأَقْبَلَ يَطْلُبُ لَهُ عَثْرَةً يَقْتُلُهُ بِهَا، فَذَكَرَ مَالِكُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ عَبْدَ الْأَعْلَى بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، فَافْتَرَى عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ: لَا تَفْتَرِ عَلَى مِثْلِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى. فَأَغْلَظَ لَهُ مَالِكٌ، وَضَرَبَهُ بِالسِّيَاطِ حَتَّى قَتَلَهُ.

Translation

✧ In the year one hundred and nine, ʿUmar b. Yazīd al-Usayyidī was killed. Mālik b. al-Mundhir b. al-Jārūd killed him. The reason for his killing was that he distinguished himself in the fighting against Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, so Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik said: “This is the man of Iraq.” That angered Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh, and he ordered Mālik b. al-Mundhir, who was over the shurṭah of al-Baṣrah, to honor him and not disobey any command of his. He then began seeking a lapse by which he might kill him. Mālik b. al-Mundhir mentioned ʿAbd al-Aʿlā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir and slandered him. ʿUmar b. Yazīd said: “Do not slander the like of ʿAbd al-Aʿlā.” Mālik spoke harshly to him and struck him with whips until he killed him.
